We did have one fellow I know of, for certain, in N scale. He was last known to have purchased a home and well along in the planning of his empire. Have not heard from him in ages and he does not respond to PMs, etc.
It's a possibility that he’s busy with other things, hopefully there’s another person who models the D.& H., I have a Bachmann GE U36B in D.& H with MT couplers I would like to unload, sell. Tom
I like modelling the Delaware & Hudson . I feel lucky as it is one of better covered railroads in N scale .
While I don't model the road I do remember D&H units on the head end of freights entering RF&P yards to either NS or CSX when RF&P was still running two hump yards. I think by then they had been absorbed by someone else and the power had not yet been repainted or lettered. Strange but I don't remember ever seeing any cars lettered for them. if my memory hold true they would often be in a lash-up of CP units but every so often it would be a pure D&H lash-up on the front.
When Bruce Sterzing was CEO of the D&H during the early '70s through just past Conrail, the road stood proudly amidst the gloom of bankruptcy that had overtaken northeast railroading. The road was a railfan's paradise with PAs and Sharks, a first-rate paint scheme, beautiful passenger equipment and lovely scenery. Trivia -- until its corporate demise in 1984, the D&H was the oldest continually-operated transportation company in the U.S., founded in 1823 as a canal company. Cool stuff.
My only encounter with the D&H was boarding a coach in Eagle Bridge, NY. That car was transferred to an NYC train in Albany, NY. This was around 1950. I remember a steam engine and crossing the Hudson River, but the rest has been lost to memory. It must have gone smoothly because I'm still here, LOL
My encounter with this line was the year I spent in Wilkes-Barre, PA. LOTS of D&H fans! That was back in 1990-91, so it was still a recent loss to them!
They were being run on track rights that the D&H received as a concession of the creation of Conrail. Was suppose to open the door for the D&H to reach further than its isolated (by Conrail) original route. Lasted for a while but they were finally given up (don't remember when). Seen a fair share on the Asheville line of the Southern Railway. The white and blue "I [heart] N.Y." was hard to miss...
When the RF&P was bought by CSX it lasted a few more years being gradually phased out. I think at that time and for a few years previous to that D&H had been fully absorbed by CP. The units used to lay over in Potomac Yard after handing their trains over to either NS or CSX. When Potomac Yard finally closed for good the Southern yard in Alexandria closed soon after and everything NS was moved to Manassas. I suspect by then the former D&H units were probably being run through on NS connecting at Manassas.
