    Hello,
I´m doing Zscale and would like to know, if there were yellow Chessie gondolas. I find models of them, but no prototype pics.
    Thank you

Something I would recommend is finding a color guide to freight and passenger equipment. There's several freight car sites on the web, too.

Good idea Hemi. Morning Sun Books offers one that provides 300 photos.

I could be wrong but I believe covered hoppers were yellow, while other cars were mostly either blue or black, with most gondolas being black

Probably not, Chessie didn't own cars outright so unless another railroad under the parent company has a yellow gondola.

Is the way I understand it even after 1972?
Railgon had yellow lettering and borders.

Actually- just found this from trainweb.org

    Quote-
    Gondolas
These hard working cars hauled anything that could fit in them. Like dump trucks they got pretty beat up. Chessie painted theirs black with yellow markings. Predecessor paint schemes for the B&O and C&O were black with white markings. The predecessor WM paint scheme is oxide red with white markings. Most gondolas were plain (with nothing inside of them for hauling loads like scrap metal). They also can have special interior fixtures to haul less than car load containers, spent carbon, bar steel, pipe, mounted wheel axles, tin plate, loose wheels, plate glass and copper billets. Most gondolas come with fixed ends, but Chessie rostered some with drop ends for easier loading. Additionally, some Chessie gondolas came with covers to protect their loads from the elements.

That´s why I opened this thread. But it looks like there´s no prototype for them.

I don't think that is an accurate depiction because I believe once Chessie System became Stock Holder the only Gondolas purchased were use Railgons.

Maybe write to the Historical Society but I don't think the example is valid.

I'm no authority but have a passing interest in chessie, having modeled it loosely and still have quite a few books/videos and I cannot recall ever seeing a yellow, or blue for that matter, regular open gondola.

I would concur with the black livery theory

    Mattias,
If you like the looks of gondolas painted yellow and lettered for Chessie then by all means do some. They look good to me. It’s your RR so do what puts a smile on your face.

Totally agree with that concept, my railroad strays quite often :D

I was just trying to help with his research.

Years ago some railroads would paint work train cars a different color. Yellow and silver were common. Could just say is in company service.
