Having a problem with brush replacement. Here is what I have: http://www.atlasrr.com/pdf/N ALCO RS3 DIESEL LOCO.pdf Here are the directions for brush replacement: http://www.atlasrr.com/pdf/PartsPDFs/NRepairManual/NMotorBrush.pdf But mine has no latches and when I put the pointy end in first it buckles inside the hole. In fact it turned sideways and I had a lot of trouble removing it. I tried disassembling the motor and it started to crack so I stopped. I have plenty of brushes. They are part number 420028. Atlas stocks them. Should they go in flat end first (opposite of linked directions)? Also terminals are wide and flat unlike those illustrated. They don't seem right when I face them the way the instructions state. Motor had stopped running. Thanks, John
Correct me if I am wrong, but this link says that N Classic Alco RS-3 locomotives were from 1950 to 1956. http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-739-n73.aspx It looks like the one in the first few photos at the top part of this page: http://www.spookshow.net/loco/kators3.html Mine was purchased in the late seventies or maybe more like the the eighties and the motor says Japan. The parts in the pdf I linked above seem to fit so I am thinking it was made by Kato. John
ok. the reason I asked is the brushes should be close to the diameter of the brush holder and not be able to turn side ways in the holder. the brushes you have may be for the atlas motors and not for the kato motor. you may need to get some kato brushes.
Never thought of that. Do you mean these brushes? http://search.cartserver.com/search...keywords=927010&maxhits=25&go=Search&bool=AND But if I do order them, does the pointy end always go in first? Thanks, John
If it's the older Kato model, I have a new chassis. $25.00 plus shipping & it's yours. I took the white headlights out & replaced them with golden lights. 0 run time. brand new.
The pointy ends go away from the commutator, not toward the commutator. In other words, the flat ends go in first. The pointy ends against the springs. Doug
