If leverman ghosts needed a residence, here was their spot -- the NKP/IC tower at Ramsey, IL. I took this in the mid-'80s I think. The good news is that the tower has been renovated, but the bad news is that the NKP line is gone and no tracks remain.
Nice photo Russell. As an easterner often surrounded by trees, phone wires and billboards, I'd have crashed the car trying to stop. I rarely see an open vista like you captured.
From 05/21/2017, an NS intermodal train begins to roll from Andrews Yard in Columbia, SC. Looking sharp at 27 Years Old, the 8314 is a former Conrail GE Dash 8-40CW.
Taken yesterday at Prosperity, SC, the former SOU depot has recently been nicely restored in authentic SOU colors.
I think it's owned by the town and used as a community center. Here's a "before" photo (not mine, I can't determine the photographer's name) -- hard to believe isn't it?
Well said. I'm a persnickety photographer and take note of this sort of thing too. Sometimes I even pick up trash around a site to improve the composition.
Carolina Piedmont No. 2007 at Laurens, SC. The road is part of the Genesee & Wyoming family. I couldn't get close, so had to settle for a telephoto shot.
South Carolina has beautiful beaches and ocean breezes, but rail lines in the northwest part of the state are far removed from the tourists. As featured in the June 1998 Trains feature Meanest Railroad in South Carolina, helpers are deployed on CSX's hilly Spartanburg Sub., a former ACL line. Here's the 5472 readied in the helper pocket at Enoree, SC.
I think it's owned by the town. I should have gone inside. I'm uncertain about the status of the track by the depot. Perhaps 20 Years ago CSX granted NS trackage rights on a nearby line segment and this line is no longer important to NS. I sometimes see cuts of motley freight cars set out in the area, so perhaps NS keeps a few miles of decayed track intact for storage.
