As I recall, RA sold of a bunch of assets, about 4-5 years ago. Or is part of G&W now? So who owns this particular line now? G&W?
That is my understanding as well. G&W is the new owner. I was surprised to see them rolling towards Wenatchee mid-morning(missed the photo op) with about 20 cars and then mid-afternoon going back to Omak. They only make a couple of runs a week apparently.
A fair portion of traffic used to be timber industry related. That has probably faded away a good amount. I'd sure be curious to see a list of active shippers remaining on that line.
I don't know how many times I have passed this historical marker in Pattison, Texas. I always assumed it had something to do with the church near it. Well, I stopped to stretch my legs a few days ago and discovered a bit of history that had passed me by, or rather that I had passed by.
Birmingham, AL was known as the "Pittsburgh of The South", as the area offered steelmakers bountiful resources of coal, iron ore, limestone and excellent transportation. This photo at the Irondale Ore Mines shows drift mining at its most basic. I suspect that the ore cars are actually on the level and that the double-track plane is on a very steep grade. This photo hangs at a local restaurant, The Irondale Cafe.
There were a few box cars(could be fruit) and a few tank cars. Looked like fuel oil or some such. Driving down through the orchards into Wenatchee we saw many trucks lined up so, probably trucking out most of the fruit now.
It took a second to see that! And then I could see that the fellas were all standing vertical to the ore cars. Really neat old picture!
