The loss of passenger trains used to be a big deal to cities and small towns. Here the local newspaper, The Jeffersonian, posed the crew for photos a week before passenger service ended. O K, Who's the kid on the engine? Southern Railway train #24, Jeffersontown, Ky. circa 1954.

Am betting it's mikado himself! BTW- What's the screen for, on top of the radiator fan?

Yep, I was 8 years old.
The screen was protection from falling rocks in tunnels. This line connected with the 'rathole' at Danville, Ky.

Interesting! How did you get up there? Were some others involved friends? Family? I know the photo is a bit worse for wear. But it's still a precious memory. And, with modern processes, it can be at least partially restored.

Someone in my family knew the editor and knew I liked trains. My mom and I rode the last run to Louisville.

Cool. At least on that day, you were a lucky young fellow.
