In this early morning view photographer C. W. Jernstrom captures Southern Pacific 4-8-4 #4458 on the Daylight Limited bursting out of the dark tunnel and into the bright sunlight at Bayshore (Brisbane), California, May 30, 1954. It has all my favorite parts of railroading: Southern Pacific, the Daylight, and the Bayshore Yard! It's also exactly one month after my birthday! The Bayshore Yard is long gone... but the CalTrain commuter and freight trains still pass thru this tunnel on their way to San Jose and Southern California.

Beautiful shot! Looks like she's flying the 98 in her number board.

I actually remember this stuff as a kid. My grandpa used to take me down to a street above this tunnel and we would watch the trains go thru. And... I'm dating myself... but some of them were Mikado locomotives hauling freight and... of course... the Daylights. My mom actually rode the Daylight to LA on four different occassions.

It's great to have those memories. I have some myself.
