Basics of sedimentary rock patterns in Book Cliffs, Utah
Throughout the Book Cliffs of Utah, the most prominent sedimentary rock pattern is characterized by the lower, slope-forming Blackhawk Formation and the higher, cliff-forming Castlegate Sandstone, as shown in this illustration. The Blackhawk Formation is predominantly gray in color and contains interspersed sandstone layers that are much thinner than the Castlegate Sandstone, which is as much as 170m thick in some locations (558 ft).
