This summary shows the seed random numbers in the top left but the interesting content are the "hot spot" tables. The spreadsheet uses conditional formatting to flag whether the specific jobs are likely to be easy, standard, challenging or impossible based on car volume. These parameters will be tweaked over time as I get more experience with the system. The table in the upper right shows the likely result of different random.

A car forwarding worksheet showing the output used to restage and with many working columns hidden. All supply requests (left) and load/MT destinations (right) are generated automatically when you seed four random numbers on the first worksheet of the Excel file. This sheet is for the industries on the Kaslo sub which is combined with the Slocan sub sheet to create the work for the Slocan/Nakusp wayfreight. Similar sheets exist for all train jobs.

This summary shows the cars which have been requisitioned from Cranbrook, a mixture of Loads from "points East", and overflow demand that nelson is unlikely to be able to meet. This is just a guideline however as the final demand is determined by the tags and cars on hand and trued up at the end of each session by noting the volume and type of car which made it to a specific industry and is ready for its next move. Any cars which didn't make it to their destination remain tagged and will eventually get to their destination.

The tags for destinations are below sorted by town. The cups above are for Nelson and staging destinations and are removable...if an industry calls for 4 XMs , just dump it in the Nelson cup. When you get to Nelson parcel them out. If there is more tag demand than Nelson can fill, "requisition" more cars from Cranbrook by dumping the balance from the Nelson cup into the Cranbrook cup...then proceed to Cranbrook, etc.

new car tags 2: close up view. The Colour designates direction/destination and the letters - when present - the industry/car spot. Blue is Cranbrook (East staging) which is East of the Nelson division point. Yellow is Castlegar/Kraft and "P&T 1" designates the Pope & Talbot mill, spot 1 at Castlegar, etc. Oraneg tags designate Boundary sub, with solid orange the Grand Forks (West staging) while "CD POT" means the Cascade Potato warehouse etc.. All orange tags are served by the Boundary freights which are west of Nelson division point. Grey means the northerly Slocan division with the alpha-numerics designating industries and spots on this sub.

One of dispatcher Len Thompson's favorite tricks to get pushers down the mountain is to cut them in behind the power of other trains. Here pusher set 8608 is cut in behind the four untis of train X8602E at Farron summit to get them to Castlegar to help train 89 up the hill. Photo by Rene Gourley, the engineer of X8602 using a "1977" photo setting on his smart phoen camera.

Farron summit train order station showing train order panel and phone to Dispatcher (and Digitrax radio throttle). An Eastbound has the Board set against it but it looks like the crew have already picked up their orders and pressed the "acknowledge button" to let the Dispatcher know that the order has been properly received and understood.
