Pier before adding track wire and pouring plaster. Brass contacts on top of the pier and under the bridge shoes provide track power.

After gluing the side trusses to the bed, the sway struts, sway braces, and top laterals were added in step 5. These were made in matched pairs that got higher toward the bridge center.

Step 3 - Side trusses (matching pairsm) are built up on the drawing. The bottom chord is continuous, 426 feet long. In N scale it comes out to 32 inches in the layout room. I used a four foot level for a straight edge and build it on a glass sheet for flatness.

Step 3 - Side trusses (matching pairsm) are built up on the drawing. The bottom chord is continuous, 426 feet long. In N scale it comes out to 32 inches in the layout room. I used a four foot level for a straight edge and build it on a glass sheet for flatness.

Bridge hunter and John Weeks are good sites to find a bridge that is the length you want. This one was the right length to span the aisle in my trainroom, single track, and no lattice work (1980's bridge). Wandering up the Ohio and Missouri on Google Earth works well too. This particular BNSF bridge in Sioux City IA has a very detailed view on Google Earth, and the overall horizontal dimensions wre taken from the ruler tool on that site.

Step 1 - get photos from internet. These plus google earth were used to create drawings. Good sources included johnweeks.com and flickr. The depth markings on the pier provided the vertical scale.
