This will probably be the last update until the kitchen is finished, I think?

I made the final push last weekend and wound up with the cabinets basically complete and then moved them to the garage. Lisa and I started stripping the contents of the existing cabinets tonight and deciding what we're gonna keep and what we're going to get rid of. I got the plastic laminate on order today, should be here next week Tuesday. Next comes the Demo of the kitchen.

All the cabinets are now finished and assembled, the doors are hung and the drawers installed.

These are the upper and lower pantry cabinets, the rest can be seen on the Blog.

Demo time. Fun, not. So often can be messy. Hope you are ll done by the onset of Fall and model RR season!

Yeah, not really looking forward to the mess and living in it. That's the main reason I built the cabinets first, so they were done and when I had the kitchen ready, I could just drop them in, instead of making a mess, then building the cabinets.

If things go as planned, depending on my subs, I hope to have it all wrapped up by no later than the end of July or August?

My "To-Do" and "Want to do" list for the layout is growing everyday....:(

Well it's been almost two months since my last update, but I've been busy and a lot has happened.
The cabinets are in, the electrical is about done [waiting on the tile guy], the flooring arrived tonight and the tile guy should get started on the 11th, ugh.

I'll post a few pics and then post the link to next blog post. At the bottom of each blog post I added a "jump to" link to the next page for ease of following if you're so inclined.

I last left off when we got the cabinets finally assembled in the shop, since then........

I am so close I can hear the trains in the basement calling me as I walk by the stairwell.
I was hoping to be done by now, but it might still be a few weeks away. At least the hard part is over!

Interesting to see how you carried the counter to the far side of your refrigerator bay. An unusual touch.

    Heh!
I think you're looking at the area where the Range and Microwave will be going BC?
I added that panel to the right of the range because I wanted it to line up with the stile on the right side of the Microwave cabinet above, plus I don't like to have the range right next to the wall. Will also be installing tile above the small strip of countertop.

    Here is the Fridge pocket

Yep. I had them backwards. Argh. I am used to a range having work areas to both sides.

    I AM DONE!!!! Finally......

We got the appliances moved in and installed last Saturday after spending the morning returning all the extra items we didn't need.

This is the best I could do for a walk through with my phone.

Once the stove was in, we decided to give it a test.
We ordered a Papa Murphy's "Take N Bake" Garlic Chicken pizza.

We still need to find some under cabinet and toe kick lighting that we like. But other than that, I can stick it a fork in it and call it DONE!!!

    Here is the before shot:

It's been a project that's been a long time coming for me. I bought the house in 1990 and I started on the kitchen three times and have been stopped three times due to major changes in my life. It's been an enjoyable journey creating this kitchen.
The best part about it? Being able to share it with Lisa and see her smile broaden with each step of the process!

Thank you all for following along and thanks for all the comments!

Now! Finally I might be able to get back to my trains and get a few things done before winter sets in...;)

Thanks George! Appreciate the thumbs up!
I couldn't help but think of you and your cabinets under your layout as I was working on my kitchen, always gave me a chuckle with the way you made use of the cabinets for the benchwork!

One step ahead you George, but thanks for the idea!
The cabinets and Toe Kicks are already wired for the lighting, we're just trying to find a good product that will work for us. My electrician has several different ideas bouncing through his head. Nothing out of the ordinary though. We're planning for LED's under the cabinets for sure and over the sink. As for the toe kick lighting, it will probably be the same thing, but those he's gonna tie them into an occupancy detector which will catch us as we walk into the kitchen from either the back door and up the two steps or in from the dining room, then they will come on so we don't stub out little toes!

He also installed a small wall mount LED in the landing over the two steps so when we come in at night, the steps are illuminated. This was a great suggestion by him!

I love the over and under colored LED's in your link for accent! But I ain't gonna show the wife that pic!!!

With the kitchen project behind me and the house back in order, FINALLY!! I made some good progress today in preparations for the upcoming ops session that I've scheduled for the 8th of October.

After getting the basement somewhat back in order last night, I got the mains cleaned enough to get the cleaning extra running!

Next comes the yards and spurs, then I'll get a session printed out and start staging the layout.

I think this time I'll replace a couple of the Through trains like the Auto Rack and Stack train with a couple more manifests and try keep closer to the prototype? I've also given some thought to clearing out the four tracks in the front yard where I keep cars (these would be the cars sitting on tracks #5 through #8 from the left) that I use on the layout and replace them with 4 more Through trains. In past session we've actually ran all 8 Through trains and had to start re-running them. This happens when we have a large number of crews show up.

We've always just pulled cars from these four tracks to make up new trains for the next session using the 0-5-0 method as we do not use this yard as a classification yard. I'm also hoping this will help keep from using the same cars over and over again?

I've got several stacks of drawer cabinets under the layout where all of my cars are kept and just pull cars from there, which is the reason I made them in the first place......

Several weeks ago I received a package from a blog follower, Doug Midkiff.
I contacted him back in March after I got some E & F unit shells back from the Blue Caboose after finding out Kendall passed away from Diabetes complications.

Doug said he would be happy to help me out with the painting. After a few weeks worth of work to the shells, I got them back together, chipped and speed matched just in time for the upcoming Ops session I have scheduled for the 8th of Oct.

Kato E8a #658 (Doug added the larger number boards from a donor F7a)

@Brian K did this Kato F7a for a customer in Germany who later listed it on eBay! I was lucky enough to score it!

Once I had them done I took them for a spin!

As always, a bit more on the blog.
If interested, Doug's info is also posted on the blog post.

Once I get past the Ops session, I plan to work on replacing both of the Digitrax PM42's with the PSX CB's I picked up and then hopefully comes some major track re-alignment to improve operations.
