Those DTI units are really pretty. I hope to see them in some layout shots at some point :)

I just picked me up one of these bad boys at the last train show I went too. Yes, not cheap but a really unique and interesting box car that roamed all over the US in starting in the early 1970's and the next 30-40 years as well under Chessie and later CSX markings:

    http://www.springmillsdepot.com/canstockmain.htm

It's the Canstock box car with the door at the extreme end of the box car. From the Spring Mills website:

"B&O box car designers in the late 1960s were looking for a better way to transport canstock. Canstock is thin steel or aluminum used for can making. After several test designs, the B&O approached Pullman Standard to build a box car using the data the B&O had collected. In 1972, the result was a 50' box car with a severely offset 12' 6" door opening. The doors on the car were not identical as one door opened to the right and the other to the left and each door has unique latching hardware. Additionally, a fiberglass roof panel was used on the 4th panel from the B end of the car to allow light in the car as the doors were located at the opposite end.

Objectives of the Car and Why the End-Door Design
Click the image below to see original B&O public relations material describing
the objectives of the car and showing graphically why the end-door design
allowed two more canstock coils to be loaded into a 50' box car."

The Canstock box car is s very interesting and cool freight car. I think I would like to get one of the Chessie versions too.

Here is a photo of a canstock car modified with a wheel assist door opener:

My latest purchase; I just order 5 of the Wheels of Time F-70-43 Southern Pacific Bulkhead flat cars that just arrived at dealers. The were built in 1966 and were still in use past 2000. They were a signature car of the SP mostly carrying lumber throughout the Pacific northwest and were frequently seen in trains crossing the Rockies. SP & D&RGW fans will find these "must have" models.

A few decades ago I got a brass K4 4-6-2. This year it finally has some company including a B6, H8, G5, L1 and GP9. The B6 0-6-0 and H8 2-8-0 are images of locos similar to those in my roster, and I am waiting on the L1. All the open-frame motors need to be replaced with modern can motors. Anyone know where I can get a quantity deal on can motors??

I swear, I really did not expect to get this. It fell into my lap. My layout is kinda small. I think it could go 4 lengths forward and back. Gotta join a module club so it can pull a 100 car drag.

Very few of my purchases are this fancy. Most are just steel wire for turnout mechanisms, and 99 cent servos for turnout motors.

Picked up a Kato SD40 in Conrail paint. Going to patch it as CSX 8885... that way it will be an ex-CNJ SD40 that Conrail rebuilt into a SD40-2R... that survived into my 2004/2005 time frame. Also, picked up this Proto work crane... which actually is self-powered(bonus!). JMS DSCF1895a.jpg DSCF1900a.jpg

150 feet of track and roadbed, 30 Peco switches, grade crossings, more stuff in the larger box, and many feet of structure running around the walls.
I sense the start of a grand layout.

jasonboche, do you have a track plan you can share?

Hi DougL. I'm building the Red Rock Northern. TrainBoard thread here. Original track plan (11x9) from Model Railroader below but I've made a few modifications to the Red Rock yard and the Granite Creek industries. I'll post my current track plan below (subject to change if the yard is too aggressive) as well stretching it into an 11x10 room.

Not shown are 5 Walthers/Shinohara curved turnouts that are sitting in the den upstairs. I should probably store those in the fire safe along with the cash and the jewlery in case there's a burglary...

Pound for pound the most costly item on the benchwork is probably that single package of Walthers rail joiners. They're out of their mind. I ordered them to see if they were special. They don't appear to be. I'll either sell them or donate them to the club. Atlas rail joiners all the way for me. They never let me down.

This is a great thread. I'm late to it but it's fun to go back to each of the many pages and see the great things people have picked up.

Nice plan Jason, all in a very small room. I found the Atlas rail joiners are a bit loose on the Peco rail. I pinch one end a tiny bit, the pinched end is snug on the Peco turnouts and the untouched end is good on the Atlas rail.

Do a excellent job on your track and you will have a good running railroad.

Bachmann 2-10-2 with decoder. Runs decent, I think a better decoder will help.

This will be Chicopee Road #1439 eventually.

I just picked up these beauties off of E-bay, have not decided what railroad I will end up painting them for.

A pair of Hobbytown FA-1 A & B Units, both powered with metai bodies, should be able to pull plaster off the wall with these puppies!
