I think I'll go with the long and the short of it on my 'pet project' locomotives:

First, my GHQ L1 - which still holds the tractive effort record for a single locomotive on my layout:

And one of my favorite all-time custom builds of one of my resin kits:

Nice job on the L1, looks good

Here is pair of kato mikes with Bachmann USRA long tenders. The second engine has a modified/ shortened 2-6-6-2 boiler. I have just changed the front walk way to look more prototypical. It is a freelanced bash, but to me looks sorta like a C&O Mike
( K2?) I got a a parts kato mike with no shell off the bay and I already had a spare Bachmann H5 shell on hand so I put them together.

Here's some steam that runs regularly and periodically here on my layout:

The years 1947 through 1956 (the era on my layout) allow me to run Big Boys, Challengers (both oil and coal), TTT's, FEF's (in both Two-Tone Gray and black), Light and Heavy MacArthurs (Mikados), Consolidations as well as E's, F's, Baby Turbines and Verandas (with and without oil tenders), PA's, FA/FB's, GP7's and GP9's, Fairbanks Morse units, RS's and other first generation switchers and road engines up and down Echo and Weber Canyons. In Ogden (The Crossroads of the West) UP met up with SP, WP and D&RGW, so I can also run various steam engines such as GS's, MT's, F's and Consolidations from SP (in Daylight and/or Black) as well as the occasional Cab Forward as well as diesels from those three non-UP railroads...so I have a LOT of variety.

Although it may seem excessive to have as many Big Boys, Challengers and FEF's as I do, I actually need more to properly represent a day's freight and passenger traffic through this area of the UP. Challengers were used for both head-end and helper service as well as pulling various passenger trains. FEF's were exclusively passenger and mail engines at this time, and Big Boys and Turbines were pulling the heavy freights (Turbines with a 3700 Class Challenger pushing to Wahsatch on the rear). The Park City Local and the Evanston Local were both pulled by either "MacArthurs" (Mikados) or GP-7's in this time period. When diesels and turbines took over completely, the oil-fired 3700 Class Challengers were still pushing (along with the TTT's) on nearly every freight headed to Green River, and FEF's in black were still pulling mail trains and second sections of various passenger trains. Steam lasted a long time on this section of the UP.

So, what I have is really not a "collection" as each engine will be run according to its prototype counterpart through this section of the UP and SP and I buy them to run them, not to have them sit in their boxes on a shelf somewhere.

    Cheerio!

That's a another awesome scene. What is the depth of that area from front to rear? Do you have a view from a higher angle (a higher birds-eye view)?

Just got the LED's hooked up and tested on this Mike, then got some color on it. It needs a bit of tweaking on the mechanism to get rid of the 'hop', and yes, the pilot truck is on the workbenc. It wasn't free rolling yet. The GHQ boiler took a bit of work to fit the Riv frame! So there is a pile up in the yard here waiting on this hot oil shipment to go through.

Just a quick photo of most of my steam. Some are regulars on my layout, while the others stay in the drawer.

Actually Ken, there are four or five Milwaukee locos in there. My Baltic is currently in the shop being converted to a streamline Hiawatha. The ones you see in green jackets belong to the C.M.& B. Also there are a couple in there that I recently purchased that I have not decided what to do with yet. There is one G.N. S-2 on the left track all the way to the back. That one was my first sound loco.
Most of my DCC engines are either Bachman, Model Power, Kato/ Con Cor and one lonely Athearn. The old atlas/riv are all dcc. I picked up several of those when I got back into the hobby. Then I discovered DCC. And those old engines were put in the drawer.

I posted this in a U-tube video back in the early days of this thread. This is a much more flattering image of one of my favorite SP large steamers. It has ESU sound decoder and speaker in the tender. No it does not compare to brass or factory made but I am quite happy with my "bash" job. Mistakes made, sure, but I will do better on the next one that I am working on.

Hope you enjoy and thanks for looking.

    As always, have fun,
    Carl
