Something is likely hokey with this. I'll bet that what the media should have mused or misunderstood is that a car is missing, not an entire train with crew aboard, lineside scanners following its route, with radio communication and perhaps lit up on a CTC board.

Speaking of a missing car I recall an article in a past issue of Trains a few months ago. A crazy story! A SP freight, in the 60s, going downgrade somewhere in California I don't exactly remember where. A car derails, and so badly that it falls along the cliff the railroad rides on. There's a gap in the train. For some reason I forgot, the emergency brake doesn't apply, in spite of subsequent brake pneumatic line leak. As the train is slowly drifting downgrade under dynamic brake, the remaining cars after the derailment catch a little speed with gravity, and couple onto the forward part of train. And finally that's when the train arrives to its destination that the yardmaster, monitoring his train order and having a look on every car of the train, finds there's a car missing... Phone calls to the departure yard, "No guys, we can assure you this car's not missing and was set into the consist", and so on.... ;) Those who subscribe to Trains certainly remember. ;)

Dom- I have heard and read similar tales from the Milwaukee Road, Northern Pacific and others. The trains had stopped due to the train line break. Cars had re-coupled gently and they just figured the hoses had somehow accidentally separated. Joined them together again and left without knowing. Later on they discovered the car in a gully or stream...

What I want to know is what is National Canadian Rail? Not CN or CP, as it is specifically referred to in the article as National Canadian Rail and the spokesman for NCR.
    Sounds like...The Onion.

It's getting really tiresome running across these sites which disguise themselves as being satirical.

Yeah Boxcab, you're right, the train also stopped in "my" story, and what you're describing happened: a crewmember found separated hoses and put them back together...

I heard the same story from my engineer running down the SP's Rabbit line in Texas before it was published in Trains magazine. He said it happened a few years earlier somewhere north of Lufkin. Either it happens a lot or its a bunch of baloney.

I was reading a similar story in a Historical Association magazine over the weekend. Rough train handling and they spit out a car while crossing a bridge. Re-coupled teh air and went on. The car was located when the RR started receiving reports of lumber floating down the river.
