This morning, I was driving to work from my son's pre-School when I saw traffic stopped with a bunch of centerbeam flats across the road. AHA I thought, the Rocklin Rocket is making a drop! Perfect fodder for WPF. Alas, I was far back in line and they weren't moving and no place to pull over. so I couldn't get a picture and I had to double back as at that point I was late for work. Typical. Perhaps the rest of you had better luck.
I caught these empty juice boxes headed back to Florida from California on the Sunset last weekend. They dug up all their orange groves in California and planted houses so they have to import all their OJ now.

Huh, California has most certainly not dug up all their citrus...they've just dug up everything in the LA basin and the OC. Also, I don't think they have a lot of juice oranges here.
Back in 2012, the railway museum here sent their A4 Pacific back to Britain for the 75th anniversary of the Mallard's speed record, nearly 130 mph. We sent it to them in this condition: One looks at that thing and it looks like a whale in that horrible color. The Brits restored it to its former glory for the occasion, and the difference is fantastic: Now it really looks great - and it occupies a prime spot in the museum, right in front of you when you enter the main building. Goes to show that when you have a hot rod, it needs the right paint job.
Russell, when I first read "on the Sunset", I thought the juice boxes were on the head end of Amtrak #2, then I saw your photo.
Sorry, Sunset Route would have been more definitive. The route name goes back to the first railroad in Texas, the Buffalo Bayou Brazos & Colorado. After that railroad was bought by the Galveston Harrisburg & San Antoino, they introduced a train that was named after the route. An early logo was also developed at that time.
I had to miss out chasing this train. I did sneak out this afternoon but it was early so I missed it. My buddy Gordon Bliss sent me this one. It will have to do.
The F7s belong to the Galveston Railroad Museum. After Hurricane Ike a few years back, the two F7s in their collection were scrapped after being totally immersed in sea water from the storm surge. Using money from FEMA and local donors, two more locomotives were purchased and rebuilt. These are former Southern Pacific engines but one of the board members at the museum is a big Santa Fe fan, so they got painted in Warbonnet. Some do not like the paint job because of its unhistorical nature but they do look nice. Now if they could just replace the SP snow plow and move those horns......................
Got this shot of CSX 464 in the pines at Weddell, SC late this morning. The SAL main between Hamlet and Savannah via Columbia saw many New York <=> Florida passenger trains in its golden era, so sidings were frequent and very short. Many sidings have since been removed, but Weddell remains and is sometimes used as a spot for Amtrak's Silver Stars to meet one another. That takes place at the wee hours when this railfan is asleep.
I believe they started life as freight units. Although some Black Widow SP Fs were dual purpose and did pull passenger. They did serve a while in the north east in commuter service. Some of the history can be found here. http://www.galvestonrrmuseum.com/history-of-the-warbonnets.html
Sounds like my area. They don't meet here. But excepting during the middle of summer, they come through here in non-photo hours.
Roger that. This is one of the very few photos I've shot of the Silver Star in daylight. This one is of a very late Train 81 at the north end of the siding at McBee, SC, taken 09/2011. McBee is a long siding, but it's too short for the two daily CSX freights to meet there. Instead, CSX usually runs the southbound train up a branchline to a power plant, then it's backed out after the northbound passes. These are monsterously long trains and it takes hours to work. If I tried this stunt on my N Scale, I'd have cars scattered everywhere.
