Now that Testors has discontinued Floquil and Poly Scale, what are you using? Did you buy any extra bottles after the announcement?
Good luck finding any Floquil.The day after it was on here,I started looking,found one bottle of loco black locally.I do have a lot of Floquil,probably 30+ bottles,and some Scalecoat & Accu-Paint,but I'm out of some basic colors,Reefer Yellow & Orange,running low on SP grays,I mix a lot of colors with them..I'm lucky,the only shop left here is carrying Tru-Color now,I bought some,but haven't tried it yet.I just hope he stays in business,it's a train shop in a flea market,only been there a few months..I'm gonna be doing orange & blue CNJ F3's soon,I'll let you know how it goes,LOL!! If I don't like it,I'll go to Scalecoat..
For RR colors, I've gone (or should say am going) to Tru-Color as well.......... I have a fair supply of the older paints, but I'll buy Tru-Color as my supply dwindles. So far, I've only tried the SP&S green and yellow colors, but I've used it on 6 locos and 5 passenger cars with excellent results. My only complaint is no local dealer, so I need to wait till I need 6-8 different colors to keep the postage from being a killer........for one color it ends up being about $10 a bottle with shipping!
Tru-Color. It is the same as the old Accupaint and if I'd known sooner that they could ship it to me in Australia I'd never have gone back to using Floquil, it hasn't been the paint it used to be for years. I'm actually doing more painting now that I don't use Floquil.
Seven years into N scale, I haven't had the need to paint any trains, so I kinda don't miss Floquil/PollyScale, and if I need to paint them, I use the supplies I already have. The only thing I need to paint are structures and scenery, which I can use cheap craft acrylics anyway. I do think there are other new brands who will pick up the slack and be the new Floquil within a few years (I have my money on Tru-Color), so there's not much need to worry really.
Microlux from MicroMark, Vallejo, and various others. I don't usually need specific exact RR colors so I just prefer good airbrushing paints. If I can't get one of the first 2 on sale, i look on ChcagoAirbrushSupply for a deal on something on sale
Just got my first bottle of Micro-Mark Grimy Black, which is rebottled Vallejo, but formulated to match old Floquil colors. Certainly looks right, haven't tried it yet. I bought enough Floquil on some certain oddball colors that someone will say, 'yeah, the first time we knew he was really loosing it was when he started hoarding those little paint jars'.....
I'm still using Badger's ModelFlex on certain colors and Polly Scale since I have a ton of that left. Will check out the Tru-Color line when/if I get back to the states. Cheers, Brian
Me too. I have bottles and bottles of Grimy Black and Conrail blue. Certainly enough for my lifetime if the paint will hold up.
I have used some model flex in the past with good results. I have picked up several bottles of the floquil and pollyscale of what I need before they were sold out. Also have some scale coat I need to try out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
Other than my stash of Polly S/Polly Scale... My first choice is Tamiya when I can use it. It's a very forgiving paint and I've had some of the bottles for years with no worries. I have some Model Master which is OK and a bottle of Vallejo which I picked up to try.
ModelFlex, but I bought a boxload of Floquil at the New Castle flea market years ago, so I have enough to last me a couple of lifetimes...
Unfortunately, I only got into a position to start airbrushing after Testors nuked Floquil, Poly Scale, and TrueLine Paints. I'm hopeful that I can secure what TrueLine colours I need this spring, but I'm already looking at Tru-Color's offerings.
My qualifier for this question is "Why do you think that I used Floquil and Poly Scale to begin with???" I haven't used either brand for decades, except for weathering, structure painting and painting figures...all that stuff that needs a flat finish. I have many bottles of the stuff still and I presume that I probably won't be running out for another decade or so. For my engines and rolling stock, I've been using Scalecoat and Scalecoat II since the middle 80's (I think), and Tru-Color for the last two years. Love the shiny close-to-prototype finishes and the colors for my road (UP) are waaaaaay more accurate than Floquil or Poly Scale ever were. Cheerio! Bob Gilmore
I wouldn't do that.Why bother starting with something you know you can't buy,then switch to what's new and available? If I was just starting,I'd go right to Tru-Color or Scalecoat..
Where did you get that True Line Trains paints are no longer available/being made? The company has their paint blended by RPM (aka Testors owners), but the production of those paints is still happening. RPM was contracted by True Line to make their paint and they have stated publicly that their paints are not effected by RPM's decision to stop Floquil and Polly Scale. I only wish it was easier to get as not many hobby stores in the U.S. carry the TLT paint line (at least not the ones I buy from online...). What I need, I usually order from a store in Canada that is able to ship via USPS. The thread was directed at people that used Floquil and PolyScale. I wasn't assuming everyone used these brands. In fact, I'm with you. I stopped using Floquil and PolyScale over a year before Testors announced they would be no more. I primarily use Vallejo and now some Micro-Mark. I found them to be far superior to anything Testors put out. I also use AK Interactive and Ammo from Mig. Great stuff. I have managed to color match all the railroad colors I need.
