Howdy Y'all!

I'm trying to be as much "Texan" as I can. I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here in 1978. Houston, Kilgore, Dallas, Houston(again) and finally Livingston.

I've retired here on Lake Livingston with my boats and my model trains (and a few motorcycles).
My interest in model trains is G-gage, mostly narrow gage stuff from the turn of the century (my century 1900... not 2000) :)
Live steam models is a big plus when I can afford it, but when a new Aster Live Steam UP Challenger sells for $15,000 or more, that's way out of my league.

I'm interested in wooden boats, mostly the small stuff. Rowboats (that's me rowing my Mandarin 17 in the background), sailboats, canoes, skiffs, kayaks, and runabouts. Restored or new build, it's all the same to me. It's a wooden boat!

Putting the time period (late 1800's, my rowing interest, and my interest in model trains together, I came up with this video clip. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I enjoyed making the video.

The rowboat is modelled after a Thames Rowing Skiff from the late 1800's. The model locomotive (although electric powered) is a 2-8-0 C-16 from the early 1900's (I'm guessing). The lake is not faithful to the time period. Lake Livingston did not exist until 1967. This area was just pine forest.

If there are any live steamers in the Lake Livingston, TX area, let me know. Maybe we can have a Lake Livingston steam-up.

Don,
A five star intro in my book. Welcome!
Can’t help but notice that the train always seems to win the race.

Don, Welcome, we're happy to have you on board. Having rowed several boats in former lives, all wooden, I'm very impressed with your Mandarin. I cannot see her lines being in silhouette, but she glides beautifully which speaks volumes....well done, sir.

I hate to set a bad example by going "off topic" on my own thread, but due to my unrestrained enthusiasm for rowboats, here are the lines.

(I hope I don't get banned from the board.) :uhoh:

Looks like a good spot to do some dock and or ship wright working - haul back - dry dock -portal crane- load -unload stuff ... yea the wind might play havoc with that eh? Nice shot tho Don! I like how you keep " suddenly appearing " the Navy might want to know how you do that !!! I know they tried that in Philidelphia but some saylors got stuck in the decks and bulkheads ....

Since you mentioned the possibility of wind, here is proof of the concept. :uhoh:

That's 40 mph wind gusts. That will take almost any model railroad rolling stock off the track.
If the wind doesn't get them, the waves will.

Don, there's a bumper sticker up here you may have seen a version of - "Not a Native, But I Got Here as Soon as I Could." Great intro and nice video - are you nominating yourself as the Texas Navy? Good to have you with us!

That bumper sticker is mostly found in the cities like Dallas and Houston. Out here in red-neck country (Livingston, TX) I've never seen them.

I didn't realize until I Googled Texas Navy that I could join if I can get the Texas governor to assign me a commission as Admiral in the Texas Navy. I might just send a letter to Gov. Rick Perry requesting said commission.

I'll report back to y'all on how that works out.

You guys really know how to get me "off topic" on my own thread. [IMG]

In an attempt to get back on track again, I'll post a photo of my Mason Boogie live steam locomotive.

Nice Bogie, and impressive bridge design. However, I see you also snuck your love of Water into the photo with the windmill pump and birdbath...LOL
