I was running some of my E units tonight and GF innocently asked why my passenger trains don't have "squiggly lights". I knew that she meant MARS lights !!! So, now I'm asking if anyone has taken a dual H/L cab unit and had one solid light and one MARS light in DC. I know there isn't much room in there, but has anybody done this ???
Thank you, bremner !!! I used the link and that could solve several things !!! Since I model BN and EJ&E, I will need beacons also !!! Fantastic advice !!!
I think it's pretty awesome that your GF paid enough attention to both the real-world and your scale model trains!
I agree. A pertinent comment rather than a 1/3 second sideways glance and a perfunctory "nice" or "cute"...or worse "How much did that cost again????" Cheerio! Bob Gilmore
I used to get by without any reaction. These days, what little I do get, often receives a dirty look. Times change, and sadly, so do spouses.
I guess I am lucky that Amanda takes an interest in the trains. She REALLY wants me to start a new layout so she can do scenery, trees and houses. She sat in on a weathering clinic at the Dupage show a few years ago and has her sights set on an Atlas Soo Line box car I got 30 years ago. She says it "shines like a new Camaro" and wants to fix it !!! She actually repaired the nose of a DL109 (see my "DL109 Warning" thread) when I was off racing in Iowa. It's an unwritten rule that I can't open a new M/T freight car 'til she reads the info on the back. I often hear, "You can't have this. It wasn't around in the mid 70s". A well placed finger to the ribs or a quick wrestling match, and I get my car back !!! She also found a local building that I would just have to build. It's "Control-Pak Rat and Mouse Traps". I had been past this building a million times over the years and never noticed it, but she was right. I gotta' have it !!! She gave me the complete Aero Train set for Christmas a few years back, and last year it was the Silver Streak Zephyr, so she knows the price of the hobby. definitely got lucky with this one !!!
I must be lucky too as my gal bought me a pair of Rock Island 'Bankruptcy Blue' GP38-2's this past Christmas and has also wanted to help build a layout(at this point she has more layout ideas than I do!) It sucks that some of you guys' significant others don't support you and your interests. And these models are far, far, far from being child's play! Show them the difference between N scale and what an actual toddler plays with, like the wooden Thomas the Tank sets.
ok, i am jealous....not only do you have a S/O that likes trains, but you get to race! I used to race karts, 1/4 midgets, SCCA AS2...due to off-track injuries, my body can't take more than a few laps
OOPS !!! I guess I didn't exactly word that correctly. What I actually meant was I was attending the Knoxville Nationals in Iowa. I did race hobby stocks in the early 80s, and again in the early 90s. Now it's just sittin' in stands !!! Sorry to confuse !!!
Hahaha...I don't have this problem any more. I've been single for about..hmmmmm....21 years?? Last week, I was converting my old SVHS tapes to digital and happened to watch a video I took of me testing an engine I'd had for several years, then decided to super detail and paint it. The comments and looks of my ex recorded on that tape brought back those lovely memories unfortunately, but made me appreciate the fact I haven't had to justify my hobby to anybody for the past...21 years?? Cheerio! Bob Gilmore
