I took in process pictures of my U23b that will be painted for the PC. I followed an article by Jim Six on detailing a PC U23b, but Jim forgot that this class of U23b's had sun shades an item that was not usually included on NYC/PRR/PC locomotives. This class was ordered by the new PC President who came from the Southern Railway and included sunshades and had dual controls with the long hood designated as the front. I used the metal A-line sunshades and since the model did not have the channel for the sunshade I added a length of .012 wire to represent the channel. Rear end of the locomotive with grabs, cut lever, and plow installed, also drilled the class lights to provide base for the jewels to set in. Installed the grabs on this loco since the PC logo will fit without interferring with the grab, if it had been a different locomotive I would install the grabs later. Side view showing the GE Lift Rings installed in place of the cast on Lift Rings and a Cab Signal Box behind the cab, as the usual location in front of the engineer on the nose did not have enough room. Front view with grabs on nose, cut lever and plow, drilled holes for DA hoses to be installed after painting. Thanks for looking! Rick J
Nice to see this sort of modeling still taking place in this era of highly detailed out the box locomotives. This is one of the parts of our hobby I enjoy the most. Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191
In the complete opposite direction, here is a Rivarossi WP C-Liner dummy. The one curious thing about it is the little Circle-L Lionel logo. (and maybe the fact that it is coupled to a DB Dining Car...)
Great attention to detail Rick. Just the sort of thing Matt (stickymonk) likes doing. I have watched him spend hours to get every detail just right to match a particular locomotive or car. Pics of completed loco later I hope. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using tapatalk 4 beta
I painted the U23B this weekend and will be applying decals this week, waiting for some details to arrive so I can finish the drive train detailing on the U23B. In the meantime: [/url] I purchased a couple of Alco Centuries off HO Interchange for a good price, they did not run until I changed out the drive shafts with the new all plastic ones from Bowser. The orginal owner had added the detail but had not touched up the paint, I will be doing that and adding the numbers in the near future. These pictures were taken on the Stongsville OH Club Layout. When I was just getting back in Model Railroading, I had this Tyco Santa Fe GP20 that was sitting in my attic for, guessing here, about 20 years. All my trains were stored in the attic since about 1980 and as I would accumulate them, I would put them in the box in the attic. A friend of mine said he would get it running for me, as all I knew how to do was put it on the track and hope it would run, so I mailed it to him. Well, gentle as the Post Office crew was, they almost destroyed it. Long story short, he was able to repair it and get it back to me. It is a great runner and am glad to have it working again.
PBRR GP40-2. Started as a blue box, I put a Mashima motor in it, LOTS of cleaning and filing and grinding of the trucks and gears. Then, I decided to use .028 mechanics wire, and simulated air lines and conduits along the frame rails..... Interior detail, .012 grabs, many Details West & Cal-Scale details.... And, eventually ended up here!!
Those blue box Athearns offer a great scope for detailing, for me these are the perfect starting place. Nice looking model, and I bet you had fun making it Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191
Thank you Gentlemen! Yes, a very satisfying build! I'm now doing a "SD24u" - from an Atlas/Roco SD24.... The original body is such CRAP, that I decided to go with a new body and parts from a later Atlas Silver. You'd be AMAZED at how cheap the prices are on Atlas' website!!!! ~ some examples: $8.95 for the body, upper, lower, and cab!!! $1.94 for THREE dynamic brake fans (3 piece, with separate fans)!!! $2.88 for THREE 3-piece, 48" Q fans!! Yeah, I'm thrilled!
At those prices and availability, it almost makes me want to go back to American model railroad building! Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
I used to have a couple of the Atlas/Roco SD24's, they used to run fantastically, I wish I never sold them. Sent from my Xperia Z using Tapatalk 2
Another old loco that runs great and has a great pulling power is this Walthers H10-44. I would like another one of these to use in transfer service but they are rare to find in England. Sent from my Xperia Z using Tapatalk 2
Something slightly different. TEBU built from an old Athearn GP9, the hood is new and scale width, this is used in yard transfers. Sent from my Xperia Z using Tapatalk 2
Might as well post the other loco in that last shot. This is an old Roco locomotive. Runs well considering it's age. Sent from my Xperia Z using Tapatalk 2
