Looking really good. You seem to be quite focused and know where you're going with this layout. Keep us updated!

 

Your plan is starting to come together quite nicely. On my "so far unnamed" RR, I built my benchwork first and laid down a 2" thick foam base. Then got stuck planning the actual route for what seemed like months. My question for you is about your foam framing..... Did you elevate your base layer to achieve more depth in some areas or did you do it for some other reason? You obviously went through a lot of "work" to build the foam framing.

 

Yes first off to achieve depth and varied topography. While keeping layout light and strong as possible. More work but it will hopefully pay off in the end.

Here is that photo update I promised.


Here is a shot of the plastered valley.
More land forming below track level. Some more angle shots.
In this last pic its hard to make out do to lighting but here is my dirt road that will lead to the camping area along the shore line.
Here are two shots of the valley cut the engineers have made by removing a rock cliff and old problematic tunnel. In the foreground a creek flowing to meet the river.

Now I understand the foam frame approach your using, your trains sure are going to have some great scenery to run through.

What i got done this weekend.



Masked of land form.
went over with plaster.


The ridge where the creek is going to be flowing to the river down the gully.
working on the shoreline as you can see raised abit.



Also built up and smoothed out my dirt road.

Looking really good. Once scenery starts going in, even a compact one like yours starts to look much bigger than it actually is. I'm also working with foam on my layout and I can't recommend it highly enough. Easy to work with and even easier to correct things if they don't come out looking as expected. Looking forward to more updates!

Its a 2kg package and I have went through 40% of it or so. I am estimating I might have to get another 2 packages for my over all hard shell work.

The rock castings and carvings I am going to be making are going to be out of sculptamold or possibly plaster of paris with the sculptamold as mortar. Have not decided yet.

Here is what i am working on this week.
I am making a box metal beam concrete deck ballast deck bridge.

The deck is made out of a 1/4 " by 1 1/2" pine board. The metal beam and concrete side walls are made out of 1/8 " mdf board. I used wood glue to assemble the pieces and then sanded smooth once dry.


Next step will be painting the deck concrete colour and the beam a rusty red brown color that is commonly seen on these bridges. Once painted the deck will be glued to the beam. Pics to follow.

The bridge yes, not many of these around yet. CP rail is building some welded non riveted beam concrete deck bridges around Toronto on the Pearson Airport to Union fast rail link. Europe and Asia has been experimenting with them as well as UP and BNSF out west as well.

Finished my first bridge.
Love how the beam substructure came out, as for the concrete the gray is a tad dark with a bluish tint that I will weather down with white powder to lighted it up. Here is the finished product.
