That scene continues to develop more realism every time I look in on this thread. I like your principle of working one scene at a time; that way it seems as if all of the details are installed prior to going on to the next. Nice Job
Candy, an excellent scrap-pile! Another possibility to add to your scrap yard is this Container tilter - certainly unusual. I have never seen one before. Currently considering having a go at adapting a hydraulic crane with one of those shears on page 2 - not available in 1:87 tho' there is one in 1:50. Candy, Your scrap yard is looking good !!! On the tilter, Louisiana Pacific used one to dump chip / hog fuel trailers at their planner/kiln in Sandpoint Idaho. Feb 1995 ( mill is long gone now ) I was working casual when the converyor from the pit failed and dumped the full 50 ft trailer full on the ground , 8 of us shoveled for 7 hours ... is a sight to see the whole truck and trailer being raised up in the air and the contents of the trailer dumps to the pit . Now they use the chips/saw dust for various other reasons ( depending on species) other than just burning in the boiler to make steam for the kiln. If you add a recycler op to your scene don't forget the wood grinder and the mix/sort pit for composting for commerical applications , and bagging cedar for pet bedding and such .
A gorgeous scrap heap! Makes me want to clamber over it to scrounge around.. who knows what kind of treasures lurk within...
This is a great thread for those wanting to model a scrap yard. I hope it keeps going. As long as your turnout functioned it couldn't look worse than the switch in the middle of this scene. haha ! Scroll to the left and you'll see this facility's little 44 tonner for moving gondolas around. I think this would be a great scrap yard to model if you had the space.
My guess would be a heavily weathered jade green piece from the New York Central System, probably Pittsburgh & Lake Erie.
I'm trying to make some smaller pieces for the pile to make it more realistic. I'm using almost the entire 2 by 4 foot area. I think to make a good yard you need space. I'll attach a picture soon.
