I dug this thread up from the bowels and blew the dust of it, lol

I've been working over the past several weeks trying to clear off the bench so I could get back to the layout.
One of the project was this U30C for a fellow Rock Island modeler.

    I started with this

Then I worked the lettering over and painted the trucks with Floquil SP Dark Lark gray and painted the handrails and walkways red

Then dull coated everything and applied the fade using a White oil paint

After coating everything with the thinned white paint I removed as much as I could with several "Q" tips. Once it was dry, I sealed it with another coat of Dull Coat.

    Looks kind of anemic?

The white gets toned down after applying a coat of thinned Burnt Sienna the same I way I applied and removed the white.
I didn't want to use a Burnt Umber as I was hoping to bring back some of the original red, it's looks a little orange. The Burnt Umber may have been a better choice?

The next layer after sealing it aghain with Dull Coat was a new color called Davy's Gray. it's medium gray but it's kind of transparent. I used this to try and dull the orange. For the most part it worked, plus it acted as a highlighter.

Once the gray dried, I sealed it again and applied some black weathering powder for the soot and few spots of rust.

It was late and I was kind of lazy so I just my iPhone for the shots and touched them with an editor.
After i got them uploaded to Picasa, they seemed to have washed out a little more, sorry for the crappy pics. I need to wait till the sun is shining again and get some outdoor shots with the good camera, until then...

Overall I think I over did the fade and got it a bit darker than I wanted to, but he seems to be happy with it.

Looks great like it came off the dead line at Silvis post shutdown!

    Thanks Ghengis!
I did kind of over do the fade. Most of the pics I've seen of the U30's do not show them as really worn or faded. Some dirt and road grime, but that's about it cause I don't think they seen too much use or weren't on the property all that long. But it adds character. LOL

Nice job. It looks like someone got every last possible mile out of it.

    The FP7's have landed!

Unfortunately, IMRC cancelled the B units so I'm going to have get out the airbrush and decals and do one of those myself.

    Cheers,

    Hi There Mark...

These FP7A units are beautifully decorated models... a paint scheme I would never consider attempting... considering I find basic black a difficult paint scheme. ;)

I'm sure you've already noticed on these models... they should have arrived for Christmas... so their glowing red noses could help Santa find his way. :funny:

I'm not too sure how I'll get around to fixing that glowing red nose... but... If any of you guys have an easy solution at some time in the future... I'd like for you to post the fix.

Otherwise... in addition to they're beautiful paint scheme... they run very well and should pull a ton of cars on a 2% grade (haven't tried though). They have good slow speed control and will crawl at about a couple scale mph.

Sad that IMRC didn't do the FB units to go with mine. :(

I see what you mean about the glowing nose (although I had to literally turn off all of the room lights in order to see it). I'm pretty sure that a little black paint inside of the headlight housing would take care of the bleed through.

I'm not looking forward to painting a B either, but at least the paint scheme is much simplified as compared to the A units -

It'd be easier still if Microscale had included the lower red stripes and the round-ended red sections in their decal set, but oh well.

    Cheers,

Some flat black inside the nose should do it.

Gentlemen... thank you for your input.

However... I should have been more specific with my request (as usual... I posted ambiguously). :eek:hboy:

The paint solution is the easy part... in fact... I would use silver instead of black because it would reflect the light away.

    Here's the REAL ISSUE. :headspin:

Mind you that I am not trying to be disrespectful of Intermountain... I'm just a bit annoyed at their recalcitrance to include assembly/disassembly instructions within the jewel cases of their models. They also have NOT provided any such information on their website... so... where are we to go to get these instructions??? Bear in mind that most reputable manufacturers will provide an instruction/assembly diagram with their products... Kato, Atlas, Athearn, LifeLike/Walthers and Bachmann are known to do this. Why... after a dozen years... has Intermountain failed to do the same??? If they want to be considered on of the 'big boys'... they have to act like them when it comes to documentation.

I am not a tinkerer... but... will try to do stuff... IF I have the instruction manual or exploded diagrams with the part numbers just in case I SCREW-UP and cannot reassemble or lose something. I know there are a lot of excellent modelers/tinkerers here on Trainboard which could assemble/disassemble one of these in 5 minutes while blindfolded and hogtied. ;)

If any of you folks... here at Trainboard... can direct me to some visual or written step-by-step instruction to remove the parts without breaking or otherwise render the model inoperative... that would be superb!!! :)

To remove the shell, you first have to remove the pilot coupler (unscrew the screw and slide the coupler out through the hole in the pilot). To remove the shell, start by inserting two toothpicks (or whatever), one on each side of the fuel tank. Then, slide the front end of the shell up and off first (if you try sliding the back end up first, the whole thing will seize up and refuse to move).

Once the shell is off, remove the piece of light-conducting plastic from the headlight housing (push from the outside in).

    Good luck!

    Thank you Mark!

I just wanted to make sure about that headlight lens. I couldn't tell if the lens was glued in place or press-fit. I assumed it was a press-fit... but... knowing my luck... I'd try to force it out and break the nose housing. I'm hoping that the lens comes out fairly easily to minimize possible damage.

Got this ex-UP F9B(rebuilt F3) done tonight finally. It just needs window glass for the old style mechanism and will be receiving working hostler lights sometime this year with the decoder.

Seeing anyone add this even as a dummy is rare. I don't recall ever seeing a working model version. The word is unique! :)

Just finishing up my F7B here. Does anybody know if they put numbers on these things anyplace? Maybe the end doors?

    Thanks!

    Thanks guys!
