    ^Nice! I do think you posted one of your f-units as someone had asked how and what you used for the radiator assembly just behind the horns. See if you can dig up more of those microchips as I need an inspiration to go cannibalise some electronics!

    Yeah I did, but that was an F2, this is the F7 A/B.
    I don't know if I have any more of those chips or not myself. I had a buddy that that was into electronics and he thew away a couple of old boards, so I dug them off and used them.

    Thanks Flash!

    Close, but all of that involves one Rock Island Unit.

    The first thing that comes to mind would be one of their half-a$$ed, hurry-up-and-get-it-back-into-service paint schemes like the 4710, or one of their numerous GE units with miss-matched doors?

    I hope to have it done for Galesburg RR Days. This one will be full detail, grabs, lift rings, fans. The hardest part will be getting the time to work on it!

    Did those exhaust extensions get removed at some point? I've seen pictures both ways.

    Thanks,

    Mark,
    Honestly don't know for sure, but can't image why they would remove them.
    Although, I have several shots of the the 454, some without stacks [June of 77] and with the round stacks [March of 77].
    One shot of 456 in Sept of 73 without.
    All the shots I have 451, 452 and 453 shows the angled stacks.

    That is if the original photographer posted the proper dates

    If the stack extensions didn't fail from wear and tear, perhaps those units were shopped and some portion of the hood needed to be lifted. At that time those parts might have simply been left off.

    Does anybody sell extensions like that?

    Thanks,

    Mark, mine should be here shortly.
    If you want I can get some pics first before you order them?

    On second thought, it's probably the only place you're gonna find the flared style....

    Finally got around to getting the last of my locomotive projects done. After the last operating session was held, it was obvious that I needed more chipped power. I started on the 3 F units first after finding a good deal on some chips for the newer DCC ready frames I had on hand. I had a chip for the GP7 but needed a DCC ready frame, and as luck would have it, the seller I got the GP frame from also had a UP E8b!

    The E's took a bit longer than expected. I was experimenting with a new method for fading and was also looking for the Snow Shields! When I started on the E's I never really knew what those things were on top of the units. After doing some in depth research I found that they were snow shields. I had an idea that I would never be able to find a detail part for these. While I was searching for something to use, several other guys started to ask about them on other forums and found out JnJ Trains actually had some listed on their web site. I tried numerous time to contact them to see if they were still for sale or in stock.....nothing, never heard a peep out of them. About that same time Jim Reising posted a pair UP E8/9's that he modeled and his units had them.
    Holy cow! Was everyone trying to model these at the some time??? Jim told me that he made his own so I decided that this would be my only choice as well.

    Here was my inspiration;

    This is what I wound up with;
