Hello all! Just wanted to share with you a new undertaking, and get some feedback. As you can see, I'm well into my next Shapeways project. Any guesses!? Any tips or suggestions for this model? Thanks!
I'm interested in learning your experiences with a Shapeways project. Lots of curves on your project. About how many hours do you have into this already? How much time learning the software to create the design?
I'll guess a PRR H-9 2-8-0 shell based on the file name and Belpaire boiler. Are you planning this to fit the Bachmann 2-8-0 chassis? Should the headlight be moved forward to sit on the bracket? Should the back of the boiler be widerto match up with the round section? I'm definitely interested in this, keep it up! Thanks, Scott
This is for the Bachmann chassis. Right now the plan is to offer two boiler sections, one with the headlight mounted on top of the smoke box, like this screen shot, and one without. I've drawn several smoke box fronts so that the modeler can customize their model. Right now, I have a sb front for the screen shot above which is blank, and one which has a platform to mount a steam generator. I also have a sb front drawn up with the headlight mounted at the top on a bracket. I might also try this: The boiler and firebox have been giving me fits. The drawings that I have be working from clearly show that the sides of the firebox are straight where it meets the cab, and they don't include a cross section from the front of the firebox. Its difficult to tell from photos that I've found, what exactly is the case, some look rounded, others look straight. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated - this is something that has to be done right on this model!
I love the idea of the modular steam locomotive shells . I'm thinking to myself how well would a camelback 10 wheeler or 2-8-0 sell ? Didn't the PRR have some ? What an opportunity to do something totally unique ! Put me down for a couple of D&H camelbacks !! Randy
Seems to me that like the K4 and the L1, the H 8,9,10 series of PRR 2-8-0's shared a basic boiler with another PRR locomotive. I'm thinking a G5 4-6-0. I recall reading this somewhere but can't remember where. If so, then maybe another use for the boiler.
Yeah!!! Baby!!! The tender too?!?!? It's about time someone listened to the voice of the people! SPFs UNITE! Hate to pile on with the "how about making...", but how about an old style flush top tender? Or a lines west tender? Anyway, How does the modular sales design affect the $5 set up fee? Do you only have to pay that once no matter how many items you order at one time? WooHooo! FS
To the best of my understanding that is correct. I have plans for all of them, but it seems like there were some modifications to each class. The boiler on the L1 K4 and I1s where the same basic design, but where lengthened accordingly. Is this true? I have an older copy of the steam locomotive encyclopedia that I have been referencing, I suppose its possible that the drawing are off or, and perhaps more likely, out of scale.
Try this website. http://prr.railfan.net/ It has all the PRR equipment diagrams for steam, diesel, electric, you name it! Go down to "Equipment diagrams" and click then go to "steam locomotives" or whatever you are looking for. Over 1,000 equipment diagrams. A truly great source of information
Here's today's progress, mostly on the tender. It's almost finished, just some more rivet detail that I would like to add. I don't think I will be able to offer too many options on the tender, there are SO many variations on them!
Here is an update from the last few days I'm still not sure I like the firebox, I keep going over the drawings that I have, and everything matches, but it just doesn't look quite right to me
The firebox sides are not completely staight. There is some boiler curvature in the middle but not to the extent you show in your drawing. It also continues back to the cab.
