Lessons Learned: 1) When getting paint...never assume ya bought enough. 2) Not all silicone is created equal. I put up the 45 degree pieces to cover the wiring at the ceiling. I grabbed a tube of DAP clear silicone to seal the edges. Let it dry for a day. I grabbed the last of the paint. Not all silicone is 'paintable'...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Resealed with a tube of Dap white that says its paintable. Let it dry for a day. Ran out of paint...Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Went back to ACE....they dont have anymore of the base color they used to mix the first batch. The guy tried other base whites...no joy. GRrrrrrrrrrrrr. So now I am sitting in THERR RV cussin myself and cussin some more. Murphy's Law.....^%$&^^(%#^*(*%$&^% Time for plan "B".
Ahh Geroge, Everything normal all....fubar. Murphy, he likes to be hard at work, when you and I don't. I went to your album to check things out. I found your track plan. I like what I see and couldn't help but notice the turntable and roundhouse area. This layout should give you hours of run time and allow for an operations night or two. Heck, I don't see anything wrong with that backdrop. Looks like the start of a good northeaster, coming in. Green with envy George. Keep us informed on the progress.

Murphy is gonna have to be disappointed and find someone else to pick on. I'm using the paint I bought on the angled pieces and I'm gonna call it "Close Enough"...LOL The one on the right needs at least one more coat of paint to cover it well enough. The one on the left needs the paintable silcone to dry and one more shot of paintable silcone to make sure its sealed and all. Then I'll paint it a few coats and get to doing the wiring. It's all good...

Allen... Thanxs for lookin. The lighting in the RV is all 12 volt...working off the power converter. There are 3 double bulb lights down the middle. There is another double bulb light under the cabinet on the right...which is just above the area that is going to be the locomotive service area. There are 2 single bulb light fixtures under the overhead cabinet in the back. There is a single 12 volt light above my workbench just out of the picture on the left. These 12 volt bulbs sure put out a ton of light...LOL. I also have one of those magnifier scissor type work lights with a CFL bulb in it for the workbench. I did take some pics in the RV with the flash on the camera OFF to show how much light there really is...its a few pages back on this thread. I wont be putting any valances etc. anywhere as they are not needed... This will give a nice wide open space to watch the trains from any angle...without hitting my head on anything. thnxs again for lookin
Now that you mentioned this, I do remember seeing something about having enough light. Sorry, should have looked closer! LOL I suppose the valances would or might become a headache at some point in time. Allen...
Yup...I am 6'6" tall. I have enough knots on my head from not ducking fast enough under low hanging &^%$(&^%*%$ things throughout my life. I dont need to manufacture more obstacles...ROFLMAO!!!
Wow! Nice progress already! Getting jealous here, but took your earlier advice to heart about the snow collapsing the trailer roof. So thanx! Am working on setting up an old 10x52 mobile home for the RR here, when time allows! And lots of extra support for the roof!! Am really looking forwars to seeing more of your work. The old pics in your gallery showed some very nice work. Keep setting the bar up there for us!
Thanxs Yea....living in snow country can be a blessing as well as a curse at times. Your 10x52 should have some decent roof truss work for snow load. If it has survived a winter or two up there already...ya have a good chance it will continue to survive. Just remember...if you take out to much roof support...in the form of walls etc...that will weaken the roof as far as load barring. Shore it up...or better still...leave some walls in and let the layout just go through those walls ;-) T.H.E.R.R. RV is only 7.5 feet wide and a flat roof. That flat roof is what scares me. BUT...It has survived at least 5 winters in storage up here so I am hopeful. The added steel tubing supports *should* do the trick. I am gonna kick myself if I put a ton of work and $$$$ in this thing and winter comes...and it sags or leaks :-( Thanxs again for lookin
George- I know it won't help with snow load, but have you looked at getting an RV cover? Not a full vehicle type, but something (if available?) more like a shower cap. This might give additional protection against moisture.
George, I got's to ask. What radius or radii or curves are you planning on using? Please don't tell me 9 3/4". Your accomodations look good and should serve you well. I had three feet of snow accumulated snow pack on my train shed and five feet on my mobile home (three years ago) and all survived. You know that white $#!+ can get heavy. A ladder and snow shovel is a good investment. Looking good.
Why not just set up a heavy duty sort of rain-fly over the RV. It would shed the snow, protect against moisture, and provide shade over the summer?
Rick... THE layout is 32 inches wide all around... Double track mains... 13 3/4 outside 12 3/8 inside Thats on both turnarounds and both back corners. Everything else is widest curves I can get
Hi David... I am trying to spend any train budget money I have left INSIDE the RV....LOL. I am pretty confident the roof will hold up...especially with the addition of those 2 inside supports. All this NEW DCC stuff I'm buying is killing my train budget and my brain cells !! Maybe I should make THE Wife stay on the T.H.E.R.R. RV roof with a broom when it snows ! (I can dream on huh ?)....ROFLMAO
You won't have trouble with those curves. Best of luck and you won't mind if I stop in from time to time to see the progress?
Yuppers my Friend... The same radii I had on the HCD hanging on my bedroom wall Everything ran fine on that radii. If ya cant go big do the best ya can in the space ya have Stop by anytime and see whats new and interesting. I value everyones input
Painted in some hills on the background today. As you can easily see....I aint no artist....LOL But...looks better then just the blue did IMHO.
