That always nice. Each ops session gets you more motivated to get stuff done. Probably why I'm busy figuring out track plans for my place.
That would explain it then. It's a very striking paint job. Seems to me that someone else did a version of this car, or was it Athearn after the got the MDC molds?
Something, way in the back dusty corners of memory, says they did re-run S&NC. But that could so easily be incorrect. I remember when those cars first showed up on S&NC rails, plus their brown counterparts. Everyone was pleased to see them, but could not figure out how such a shaky enterprise managed to get them. Some day I need to get just one, if only to say I have one....
With the 6th ops session behind me I decided to return to Malvern to work on more scenery. The last thing I worked on was the Heavy Metal Ind building and the covered unloading pad. However, I got a new fire burning under butt before I could get started, LOL! About a year ago I was reading through some posts on another forum where this individual added a huge Asphalt industry to his layout by using 3/4" plywood for the main structure and then covered it with Styrene. I thought to myself "What a clever and simple idea for a huge complex"! So, after reading through his posts numerous times the cogs began to turn. I took a few measurements and ran off to my wood shop. Crushmoore, Ind is a pulpwood plant that resides in Malvern and is served by the W&OV. I wanted it to be the largest industry in town and the focal point. I had planned to use the Pikestuff kit "Milton A Corp" kit for Crushmoore but, after reading his thread I knew I could do bigger and better! This is the project that I was asking about in another thread about what would be the best glue to use to bond styrene to raw wood. Here's what I came up with, the building is made from 1/4" and 1/2" plywood: There's more info and pics on the blog. I'll have another post ready to go shortly as soon as I get the pics uploaded with the styrene glued in place.
I should have the next batch of pics uploaded in a few days. I have one more piece of facade to glue into place and the trim is done. Then everything will be painted and ready to add some the rooftop details.
Here's a recap of what I wound up with after getting the styrene siding glued to the building. OK, had a chance to work on the building for several nights and got the styrene stuck to the building with decent results so far. I didn't have too good of luck tracking some of the adhesives that were mentioned here, so I wound using this: It seems to be holding very well. It dries clear and has given me ample time to adjust the styrene after applying to the building, which is what I was looking for. Not sure if this will be my glue of choice, but for this project is seemed to work fine. It's nothing more than a thick water based contact cement, almost like a caulking. I still plan to look for and try a few of the adhesives mentioned. Here is what I came up with so far, it needs some cleaning up yet; filing and sanding but it's turning out about as I expected it should. I plan to add a facade around the top edges and then add some "L" strips to the outside corners to accent the building with trim. All the windows and doors are ready to install once I get the building painted, if I can decide on what color to use? Debating between a light tan or beige with white or brown trim? Then start adding all the little rooftop and building details. Updated the blog...

OK, last night I got the final pieces of the trim applied and tonight I touched everything up. I'm pretty happy with the final colors, a nice neutral color that should blend in very well and not stand out like a sore thumb. I have a PikeStuff kit for a single engine stall that I will use for the loader that will be placed just in front of the Head House and will sit about where the BN woodchip car is sitting. In the second shot, the small long recessed notch will be for truck/trailer loading and the then I'll need to make some sort of conveyor that will load the logs into the building on the left end. I think I might try to make some sort of cover or canopy for this. A few more pictures can be seen on the blog. Next up comes what I think will be the fun part: Adding the Legos for the roof and building details.
That came out very nicely. I like your comment about the color. You might have saved a few dollars as well, versus a store bought kit?
Thanks Boxcab! On this first one, probably not. On the next one maybe. I have enough stuff left over that I can make use on the next build, so if you spread it out over several builds, it should bring down the numbers. I think the total was just over $62.00 for all the supplies needed. If a person has a good supply of leftover parts and pieces it would help greatly. The more one makes, the more parts that will be leftover. I know I looked at using the Superior Paper kit for the base when I first looked at this awhile back, even then that kit was going for around 60-65, now it's up near $70.
This was a productive weekend, got quite a bit done on the Crushmoore building at Malvern! Got the chip unloading shed pretty much done and scratched a log conveyor out. More on the BLOG!
Got a little bit more done this past weekend. In the previous post you can see three wooden blocks, these will be the dust/chip collectors. I got the styrene glued to them to make the legs and bracing. I'm waiting on a few more parts before I paint them and sit them in place, also need to make a concrete pad for them. I also got the canopy raised on the Heavy Metal, Co. Really wish Walthers would have included an over head crane with the N scale kit like they did with the HO kit. I've got the N scale version, but it way too big for this kit. I'm gonna try to kitbash it and shrink it fit.
