Randqust, And that's a fact. Jerry, got to love those centennial Santa Fe units. Looking mighty fine.
Both the SD24's and the RSD15's were delivered in zebrastripe. The SD24's had that wonderful silver "Santa Fe" on the side which was a great evolutionary paint scheme between the two. http://www.qstation.org/SD26/atsf927_zebra_big.jpg The RSD15's got at least a few as well with the silver "Santa Fe": http://www.trainorders.com/images2/view.php?264167 Both were delivered in a simplified zebra scheme, this was an interim expiriment that didn't last long but it's still one of my favorites. And yes, I have a soft spot for the Bicentennial SD45-2's as well, and someday a soft spot in my wallet as the IM's are pretty well done. Micro-Scale doesn't offer the decals anymore either. "Way back when" I actually handpainted an Atlas SD45 in that scheme. Anybody following that is following this thread that is suddenly stunned by the number and variety of ATSF schemes out there, welcome to the club! Now, into that mix, throw in the fact that the entire roster was renumbered between 1969 and 1970. That's also a dead giveaway (at least to me) when I look at a shot (real or model) to establish the year. For example, SD45's were delivered as 1800's but became the 5500's after the renumbering. Pretty much everything except the F's were redone in a four-digit number.
According to the Diesel Dept. curator at Illinois Railway Museum, their alligator was delivered in blue. This came up earlier last year when, knowing restoration was to begin, I asked if it was going to be done in zebra and he said it was delivered in blue...and he was going to paint it accordingly. The engine, incidentally, is now operable after being frozen for 20 years...
There is no such thing as a bad ATSF paint scheme, period! I can not decide which is my favorite, that would just be too difficult. The Zebra's are cool, the Cat Whiskers are cool, the Cigar Bands are cool, war bonnets are cool, the pinstripes are cool too.
Agreed. According to McMillan, there were multiple orders of RSD15's between 1959 and 1960 for the 50 total units; 23 units in 1959 and the rest in '60 (40 on the roster in '75). By 1960 the blue scheme had been introduced, and according to TrainOrders, the class of '60 was delivered in blue and yellow.
Kind of makes UP's sea of Armour Yellow look boring doesn't it.:tb-wink: Don't forget PA #53 painted in a one off gold warbonnet in the 50's, to star in a TV commercial I believe, and the pre-zebra stripe plain black scheme on switchers.
Wouldn't that gold PA be a big seller! Thanks for mentioning this, i never heard about it before, and to follow up with the photo is, priceless!
I actually like the 'oddball' warbonnets... specially the Yellowbonnets and Bluebonnets! I obviosly prefer the 1950's-1960's traditional F unit colors with the red warbonnet passenger units and the Cigar Band scheme for freight units. In the hood units... the Zebra stripe and blue bookend schemes are my favorite.
This thread has got me thinking. Does anyone model the SPSF? There are plenty of other what-if model railroads, so I'm sure someone has. I wouldn't be that hard would it? (Please say it would be hard, I've got too many other things to do)
Wow, talk about setting yourself up to be at the mercy of Microscale! I'm assuming that you mean the full "SPSF" that never happened, not just running the Kodachromes with half a scheme on them. So that you'd need the missing decal letters to finish any factory paint jobs out there. Wheel of misfortune! "I need to buy an "S". I need to buy a "P"..... http://www.microscale.com/Merchant2...uct_Code=60-469&Product_Count=&Category_Code= http://www.microscale.com/Merchant2...uct_Code=60-496&Product_Count=&Category_Code= I never noticed this before...but the nose heralds don't have the missing letters. I'm doing my best to talk you out of this! Probably the only factory-done paint scheme might be something Con-Cor did, considering the legacy of never-happened stuff out there. I found at least one N scaler that's doing it, although there isn't a lot of Kodachrome. Nice stuff though, very nice: http://www.owensvalleysub.com/index.html but it looks like the layout was KO'd by a burst water pipe.
Were the tiger stripes white and black or silver. Was the unit at Dearborn station special with it's silver stripes?
Randy, there was one loco painted with the full SPSF paint..and it was painted with both white and yellow lettering. Southern Pacififc 7551 was the loco, it was a SD45R http://southernpacificmodelerssociety.freeforums.org/sp-sd45r-7551-spsf-merger-scheme-t466.html
That's the one. I wasn't sure about scanning and posting a photo from a book. Santa Fe didn't seem to mind doing this sort of thing as they painted 2-6-2 #1010 red in 1964. http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/sf1010.jpg Then there was the Maersk GP60M.
