Ever since I was young I wanted to get started with this hobby. I'm 16 now and I found a place I can store my track. I'm very new to this, but N scale will best fit my size needs. I was wondering If anyone had any recomended layouts for the size space that I have. My space requires a Max of 81x28 and a max vertical height of 6 inches. Can anyone help me get started?
I would suggest going to http://www.cke1st.com/m_train2.htm and looking over the plans there for some ideas.
81x28 sounds like a perfect place to use a HCD (hollow core door) layout. Standard doors are 80 inches. Get a 28 inch door and it should fit right in. The 6 inch height is a little tight. The door is going to take up about an inch and a half leaving only about 4 1/2 inches to work with. Do you have any way to get more height? If not it sounds like it will have to be a very flat setup. If thats ok, I say go for the HCD.
Here are 2 that I like the prob is they only go 5 ft....so idk what to do with the foot and a half left over....
If you want to use one of these as a base you simply add track to the long sides and stretch the plan out to 80".
Looks like a good start. I say first you should decide what kind of track you are going to be using. You have a lot of choices, sectional track with roadbed (Kato, Bachman, etc) or snap track (Atlas, Peco, etc). You may also want to use flex track. Also what code track (ie. code 55, code 65, code 80) are you thinking of using? The answers will narrow down what to buy for you. If you don't know, you should start by doing some homework first before buying anything.
