We are now leaving St Louis. We topped off our water. Sun broke through the clouds.

Happy to see the sky clear for your run through IL to CHI. Great photo framing the Arch.

Looking through the end door up at the rear door of the last Superliner. The corridor of the sleeping car.

Well, the trip is over and I am back home in Texas again.
This is a shot of the gang aboard for this excursion as we are getting close to our destination in Chicago.

I think this is my favorite shot from the whole trip. A freight was in a siding waiting for us to pass as we came into McGregor, Texas yesterday.

Thanks. Was fun sharing. We had an excellent time. Now I have to save up my $ for a while just in case we put together another one of these "Foamer" excursions again. We don't pick the date or destination, we just go along on short notice for the ride when the cars are being moved to set up a charter.

Thanks for the trip report. Now that is the way to travel. I assume you flew back home after arriving in Chi-town.

Yes. We hailed a cab in front of Union Station to take us to Chicago Midway Airport and were back in Houston in a few hours. Sitting in a tiny airline seat for even a few hours was a big letdown from our previous accommodations.:(
Our son met us at the airport in Houston and took us home.

I was wondering how you arranged this. Do I understand that you were "already packed" then called to see if they had room on a deadhead run to anywhere?

Well, we don't call them. We have an "arrangement" where they call us. Then we scramble to fill the ten openings from our pool of interested folks at the Gulf Coast Chapter of the NRHS.

I took this photo at about the same spot on Tuesday morning as I took the similar shot below on October 17, 2009. What a difference the calendar and Daylight Savings time makes.

I was told by an Amtrak manager (on a NRHS Superliner excursion) back in 1998 that the 500's were fuel hogs and that two of the P42's would use a third less fuel than two 500's.
