Well, I have done a lot of research these past few months, and decided to go with a N scale setup. But now I am pissed that with all the posts I have read today, I am still months away from my first purchase.

I have decided to "finish" the attic and give me the room to be out on my wife's way and able to build what I desire. Just have to figure out how to get AC and heat into the attic. I have to plan the attic work before I can plan my railroad. This does not seem fair. But I am motivated.

I came across Trainboard today. I have joined other boards for other reasons, mainly cigars, but have found the posters there to be boring and very opinionated. Did not see that today on Trainboard. People here just seem to not only enjoy the model train hobby, but take pride in the work that they do to enhance the hobby. I was impressed.

My wife says I have too many hobbies now. The cigars are ongoing, the motorcycles are new this past summer and the woodworking (or wood practicing) is ongoing for two years. After seeing Marktheshark's post, I told her I can now combine the hobbies. Need the power tools to build the layout. Can probably find a N scale Harley Davidson to put on the layout somewhere. And, once I am done, can enjoy the victory cigar as I watch it all come together.

I am sure I will have questions. I hope you can tolerate another new guy. From what I have read, I think you can.

Not that people here have a strong opinion on THAT choice... :)

Welcome, Chris. There are warm, friendly, and knowledgable people here. Some even incorporate all three traits!!!

    Hi Chris,

    Welcome to TrainBoard.
Let me say that there are no dumb questions here. I know this because I have asked some real doozies [IMG] here and have received answers to them.

All joking aside, ask and you shall receive. There is a lot of knowledgeable people here (not me[IMG]) that can prove a bunch of help.[IMG]

Hey Chris, Great to have you on the TrainBoard...WELCOME!

The beauty of having an unfinished attic and an unstarted railroad system is that you can work on both at the same time...build a small floor and a little insulation around a small section of wall, then build a small table for a little bit of track (don't forget 1 engine, 3 cars, a caboose, and a power pack), then add more floor, more insulation, more table, more track, and....oh well, you know the drill. If you spend small amounts of money each time, your wife may not even notice.....R-I-G-H-T :tb-wacky:

Don't worry about finishing anything with model railroads, the fun is in the planning, building, and running. I finally finished my first 6 square feet of scenery, and it only took me 65 years of agonizing over what if I don't get it right, then I realized there is no "RIGHT" to a model railroad, cuz I'm the only one who had to be satisfied.....:tb-embarrassed:

Thanks guys. A few tips already, this site is great.

Money spent...she will notice. But, she will also insist that I buy the good stuff, not the cheap stuff. She is that way with the cigars, so I am sure of that.

However, for every dollar I spend, she will of course spend 2 bucks on something else. The cost of having a hobby.

Welcome. Other than flooring and some heat, why finish the attic if you weren't planning on it?

Why finish the attic? Well, everyone here seems to enjoy showing off thier trains after the completion of their project. Some even during the building of their layout.

My wife would be appalled if I brought the guys up into a dirty, filthy area. I figure the flooring should be easy. The walls should be a snap. The roof will be another issue. I got a contractor friend who should help me there. Want to make sure it breathes and all the good stuff.

I have also noticed on some images that you guys will say "don't mind the mess in the background". Well, again, my wife would be pissed if I did not pick up. Don't get me wrong...she is a sweetheart, and she tolerates me. So this is the least I can do.

Plus, she has spoken about a small area there where she can do scrapbooking. Let face it, the bottom line is, if she is happy, I am happy.

    Welcome to Trainboard...

Well said. Years ago my boys age 13 and 14 at that time gave me the deer-in-the-headlight look when I did something off the wall for their mom ( T.H.E. Wife ). I huddled them up and told em... "If the momma aint happy...aint nobody happy."

Fast forward to last month. My oldest did something wacky at their house for his wife...cant remember what. Yes I gave him the deer-in-the-headlight look. He laughed and told me "Dad...one of the biggest lessons I learned from you is.."

"If the momma aint happy...aint nobody happy.":tb-wink::tb-smile:

    Welcome to Trainboard.

Along with heat and electricity in that attic don't forget air conditioning or great ventilation. Plastic cars and buildings along with rails don't like excessive heat. As me how I know.

Hope you enjoy N scale as much as your cigars and Harleys.

I have lucked out with the house we bought. The guy next door was the one who put in the AC. The heck with the plastic, in the heat my fat ass would melt. Where's the enjoyment there?

I have throughly enjoyed this site so far. Today I spend some time going through the images on the site. Wow, some of you guys are really talented. I hope I can reach that level some day.

Thanks for welcoming me to the site. So far, it has been awesome.

Oh no....my wife is going to upset that you did that. I can see the money flying down there already. Those are cool looking vechiles, and the structures on the site look cool also. I need to get started sooner rather than later, cause now I have an itch.

    Thanks for the link randgust!
