wow....just wow. I have a Con Cor model from the 90's begging for that bash. I would love to have an article on that for refference...and a gray boiler
the later AC's had a different wheel base. The early ones had 57" drivers and the later ones were 63" Though, there was one 57" driver AC that was wrecked and rebuilt with a later cab.....and a Vandy tender
I agree...that skyline is incredible. I wish that someone would make a kit for a MT4 based off of the Bachmann Mountain...I know, wrong wheelbase, BUT it is closer than anything else.
Way back in 1976 I started on this - trying to resemble HVRR Lima 2-6-0 #5 (1910): This is the heavy bash of the Rapido 0-6-0 I did way back in 1976, particularly on the tender to get 8-wheel pickup...and put a Trix U28 motor in it... it still runs great: And here's what's under construction now, now that I have the actual Lima drawings for it: That's with the Atlas 2-6-0 frame and a gearhead drive in the tender. My techniques have become slightly more sophisticated along the way!
Doesn't seem out of print, as I got a copy some weeks ago (through amazon in Germany). Best check the Kalmbach website.
Keeping credit where credit is due, that's Chris333's locomotive/mechanism design that I copied for my own project.... mine's a 2-6-0 instead of a 2-6-2, but under the hood I copied Chris' design right down to the NWSL part numbers. Jerry, I hadn't noticed the Sierra modifications that you made to that, particularly the star, that's cool.
I saved a lot of the pictures from this build, with the plan to copy it myself one day, although I didn't get any of the NWSL part numbers, so I guess I will be playing the guessing game!!
My three kitbashed PRR steam locos... From left to right, an H10sb 2-8-0, an L1s 2-8-2, and an M1 4-8-2:
Just to show how inbred that design is, the domes on the top of Jerry's #30 were copied from a spare Rapido 0-6-0 boiler I had (extra parts for HVRR 5) by Chris when he built it. Delamize, I kept my NWSL parts bags. The critical parts are the steel worm, the washers, shafting, and universals. The 'tough part' to locate is an extra set of somebody's nylon bearing inserts (like Atlas) for a diesel. Those go in the Atlas 2-6-0 frame and that's a bit of a trickys slow file-and-fit process. The fact that the NWSL steel worm mates well with the Atlas/Micro-Ace worm gear is the secret here that nobody would guess unless you'd try it, and that's a pretty radical and irreversible modification. Jerry, I didn't realize what a great job you'd done tweaking that 2-6-2 to Sierra 30 until I looked it up on the Niles Canyon website. That counts as a double kitbash.
I got plenty of those Nylon bearing lying around, the hard part is talking the wife into letting me by a $75 locomotive to chop up!
