Passengers once rode behind this magnificent locomotive, termed the "Daylight," for the many Southern Pacific Daylight routes up and down the California coast, inland, even up to Portland, OR, to the Passenger Terminal pictured with her, Portland Union Station. On TrainDay 2010, many passengers arriving in Portland had to exclaim, "What the heck is going on here," as they dragged their luggage through the massive crowds attending the TrainDay event. There were booths and crowds And passengers of all ages arrived, transported by RAIL.
You can use the "same material" as your shots are great from Portland. Just use a different theme. You have the train together, and I didn't get that. After all, Portland had to have the best TrainDay celebration of all the others, right? :tb-biggrin:
Grand Junction's National Train Day For a small town Grand Junction, Colorado put on a pretty good event for National Train Day. The local group "Friends of the Depot" had an open house to build up support for the restoration of the 1906 depot. I had never been inside the depot so this was a special treat. Another treat was getting to meet local Train Board member Ralph (Rdandrea). Ralph was able to give some additional history about the depot as well as introduce me to some great people. Let's have a look around the depot. I believe that this piece of stained glass was replaced in the 1990's during the first attempt to restore the depot. The next photo gives a better view of the depot's interior. Sometime around 1920 a second floor was put in the depot which has since been removed. Evidence of the second floor still remains as you can see the ends of the orange I beams sticking out of the wall. Our visit concluded after watching Amtrak pull into the station. Ben
The Trains of NTD Portland Good point. And so I present The Trains of NTD Portland. My wife and I arrived via MAX blue line from Beaverton. We left it behind at Pioneer Square and walked through the Pearl District. After about 2 hours of soaking up information, atmosphere, sights and smells (4449 smells a little different from 3751 for some reason) My wife wandered back to Pioneer place to Shop while I waited for 4449 to leave. First was UP Freight coming from BNSF tracks heading to Albina yard on the other side of the River Then Amtrak's 6:15 southbound Cascades leaves the station for Salem and Eugene and points in between Finally, 3 and a half hour after my wife left me, she had made it home and 4449 got a highball and left for Brooklyn
I did end up with some video tonight, but it will take some time to get unloaded. What a surprise that the train we caught on the NKP turned out to be the circus train!
Yes, Colorado Midland's tracks came as far as Grand Junction. As I recall, it didn't go belly-up until 1917, so the Depot served Colorado Midland for a few years. I think it was the transfer point from Midland to Rio Grande for passengers going to Salt Lake. And I don't think that stained glass was replaced as much as restored in the last renovation.
The only passenger rail service on Vancouver Island consists of the RDC "Dayliner" owned by VIA and managed by the Island Corridor Foundation. The RDC travels between Victoria and its northern terminus, Courtenay, daily. First, the RDC arrived yesterday about 15 minutes behind schedule; Dismounting passengers left in various directions, some greeted and driven away by those they knew, while others had to make their way home alone. Passengers and greeters mingled freely at this informal station stop. No security concerns here. Finally, the call for all to board is announced (shouted by the conductor) and the few remaining passengers line up to board the shiny fluted steel conveyance that will have them in Victoria, or points in between, by 6:00 pm.
