Well, after being out for most of the year, I thought I would treat myself to a new engine. Got outbid many times but in the end I managed to win a NEW shay at a shamefully low price...arrived today and man-o-man its nice. The Tsunami sound makes all the difference in the world...the brakes are GREAT and it runs like a top...now if I only had a layout to run it on!

ALSO...get THIS...the wife has asked me to BUILD a Christmas layout since we have all kinds of family coming. I guess just running it under the tree as always is not good enough for the visiting dignitaries!! Hope I feel better by this weekend so I can get started...

Do you still have your two Climax lokeys?

Get busy! You can't pass up this layout opportunity!

I do still have the Climax engines and the shay will round out that portion of the stable. Now if I can get DCC in all of my 2-6-0s I will be ready to roll when I get to build the real layout. As for the Christmas layout (which BTW Darren I STILL love your set up!), I have two Bachmann Christmas sets, one freight, one passenger. I want someting simple that I can just let run BUT maybe a bit more interesting than two loop arounds. The layout will be on 4' x 8' foot styrofoam (as seen in the pics of my "practice" layout before the fire). Feeling well enough today to get started...at least gathering materials. Any ideas for powdery "snow" other than the Wooodland Scenics stuff which is far too expensive to put on a temporary layout??

How about two passing sidings, one on each side of the tree...equipped with spring switches...and either carefully set each train to the same speed or use electronics so that they always meet at the passing siding?

    Hehe. That would be cool!

Well...looks like two simple ovals with a single switch on the inside loop...BORING!! Bought a 90 degree crossing (only one they had a Hobby Lobby) but can't get a fogure 8 onside the outter (exterior) loop... FRUSTRATING

GRUDGINGLY a 4' x 8' plot. When she saw it last night she said "oh...I didn't think it would take up so much room" and so I offered to tear it down and put it back under the tree BUT she said no it would be just fine...

Are you running on DCC or DC? I ask as I picked up a shay and climax both with Tsunami sound a few months back. I have not run them on DCC, only DC. but on DC I was disapointed with their performance. seemed to take a lot of voltage to get going, would not run too slow and the sound seemed very off from the speed. but then I'm using an old DC Tech II dual power 2800 and some real old HO track I have left from the 1970's and one piece of new flex track. (I usually model N scale) But my PCM On30 Goose runs and sounds awesome and far better than the Bachmann Shay & Climax on the same test track.
I'm thinking about picking up a DCC systemand at least a ring of Kato unitrack for under the Christmas tree. Hoping to run the new On30 in a loop one way and my Dad's old 1940's Lionel around the other direction - 2 loops under the tree. - sorry my dear wife, but there may be no room for presents under there! ;-) lol

I was under the general impression that most people can't really tell if the exhaust is synchronized or not with shays...the exhaust is way too fast. If it is off, it could either be programed or a CAM added.

I'm happy to be able to type "exhaust" instead of the "chuff" that manufacturers love...I guess it is the toy train sound influence...since it is always referred to as "exhaust" or "stack talk" on 1:1 locomotives.

To me, "chuff" always leaves the same impression you've described. I like hearing a sharp "bark" from a shotgun stack.

ok, I pulled out my shay and climax. the climax seems worse for timing, just sounds like it is cranking along sound wise while it is barely moving. barely moving as in you have to watch it closely to see that it is indeed moving. then if you turn the throttle up to like 50 (of 100 ) it moves about scale speed but the sound seems like it is highballing along. this is on DC. going to pick up a DCC system and see how it is.

You're getting closer to building your layout. How much track under the tree? I'm shy about putting a train under the Christmas tree because there will be four tiny hands powered by powerful knees that will be drawn to a train. Fortunately, I'm building an N shortline layout and these little ones can sit on my lap, or be held, and I'll try to fill their minds about railroading, model and prototype.

I intended my post (above) to the thread about building a layout under a Christmas tree. I guess I hit a wrong button, but don't see how. Anyway, apologies.

Looks like I sent my reply to the right place after all. I guess I was confused about the thread wavering away from Christmas trees.

I feel obliged to ask this question...

Shays are supposed to sound like their doing 150mph at 15mph...does yours sound like 150mph while moving at 1.5mph?

I run on DCC for these. Just a test track for the shay right now as my layout was destroyed in a house fire last year. On DCC I am very happy with the performance and sound...but then I am not too picky regarding timing and chuff...to me having sound at all is a miracle ;)
