Getting ready to paint another shell. Glad I bought a lot of Polly Scale while it was still available.
Taking a break from the larger projects to do a much smaller one and this one away from the harbor waterfront area. Working on building the Friday Harbor engine house. The base structure is a wood AMB Laser Kit of a single stall engine house. To that I am adding an inspection pit to the engine house and on the right side a roofed over open sided car repair shop also with a small inspection pit. To frame up the car shop I am using styrene I beams with some of the scrap wood left from the engine house for the foundation. Artist craft board is being used for the base, the same stuff I used for the ranch mini module bases. The wood for the kit received a light gray primer and once dry the wood received a light coat of white that allows some of the gray show through so it ends up a dingy faded white. This is one of those things that I am just plodding along on. I have a clear vision of what I want but that roof will be a challenge which is why I am waiting to put the roof on the main structure.
John , I love the work on that little engine house , it will really look nice on the layout for sure. Mike
Thanks it is a nice kit as a stand alone without my additions. The little structure will be able to handle my largest loco for the new layout a MicroAce 2-6-6-0 with just the back end of the tender sticking out. The only other engine house that will be on the layout is an old stone two stall that I believe was made by Kibri. Both will have the small Atlas turntable.
Did a little more work on the Friday harbor engine house. Decided that I would take a page from some of the kits and say the heck with trying to detail something that won't be seen. The engine house will sit in a back corner so what is under that roof structurally with the open air addition won't be seen. Life gets a little easier since that detail is hidden and won't be missed even by the most keen eyed nitpicker. Ships, docks, and other structures block a lot of the view and the front can only be fully seen from about four foot away looking over the sawmill.
Did some more work on the engine house this AM then after taking the Missus out for dinner came back and applied the tar paper roofing this evening. I am not completely happy with any of the peel and stick roofing although this stuff from the kit seems to work a little better than some. The lean to addition got some left over sheet paper from my scrap box that was affixed using carpenters glue. All will stay overnight to allow the roofing to set up before I take a single edge razor blade and trim off the excess. I managed to box in the top of the cars shed and that hides the lack of roof joists and there is enough clearance from top of the rail to get a standard 40 or 50 foot boxcar in there.
My Very first Trestle Build. It still needs to be painted but I'm VERY happy with the results! It's a Black Bear Trestle kit.
I haven't heard of Black Bear before this but it is a sturdy looking trestle and looks worthy of a mainline. Good job.
Finished the Friday harbor engine house. Finally got the tar paper the color I wanted by using a water based black diluted with water wash. Applied some ballast under and around the car repair open area. Installed steps in the pits and then associated clutter around the car repair area.
I love the engine house and the associated flotsam and jetsam in the open area. Your builds have me looking at kits as they might be and not as they are marketed. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. Trey
