Thanks Jim! If you do visit I highly recommend doing so during Railfest so that you can take in the bus tour of the yard.

As we approach Cheyenne I tried to bag a couple of shots from I-80.

After checking into the hotel and grabbing some dinner, we went out to do a little evening railfanning.

As we continued walking we came across two UP trucks in a parking lot.

Next we stumbled upon some surviving fallen flags near the depot.

whew, had to go digging to find this thread!

I went on a 3 week vacation last month from home here in AZ up through Utah and Idaho to Montana. Did a bit of railfanning along the way and got to take some pictures at places I've always wanted to go see. This was also a camping trip and I had other people with me so my chances of sitting trackside for hours or driving to many different locations was very limited. The train gods were with me though, as I did happen to catch some really good activity when I was out and about =)

The first shots I was able to grab didn't come till the Snake River valley in Idaho, at Glenn's Ferry. These were taken from the truck while pacing the train at 60mph!

Next stop is St. Maries, Idaho

It was an overcast day in St. Maries, Idaho, but at least it wasn't raining. Drove down by the yard of the short line to see what was going on. Unfortunately I missed the daily train to the UP connection at Plummer, but was pleased to see all the old stuff sitting right next to the road. =)

After the overnight stay near St. Maries, it was time to head up to Sandpoint, where the real fun begins! If only this overcast weather would go away....

After getting to Sandpoint, the rain continued for a few days. In between sprinkles, I was able to grab a few shots as we went for a drive up to Bonner's Ferry.

Following the tracks on a backroad outside Napels, there was a break in the trees at East Naples CP. As I grabbed my camera and got out of the truck, I was surprised to see a black bear running across the tracks not more than 30 yards from me! By the time I could get the camera out and the cap off, he'd already run across the tracks and was heading up the other side.

    zoomed in

He must have known there was a train coming, cause as soon as he was into the trees, the headlights of a BNSF train appeared in the distance.
