Ok. I thought that I would start my own "layout progress thread" since the layout is now getting more interesting. Layout overview: My layout is based loosely on the C&O Mountain subdivision or the CSX North Mountain Sub, same line, different eras. However, I have chosen not to model the depots and buildings accurately to the C&O since I am often tempted to model Norfolk Southern and encase I someday cave, I don't want to have to rip out all my buildings! :tb-ooh: The layout built on a 3' by 7' door with a backdrop running through the middle. The other side of the backdrop from the C&O will be the ATSF's Glorieta sub. I have not begun modeling that and will not until the C&O part is finished. I'll probably start a separate thread when I begin construction on that side. So! I have been focusing on the left hand side of the door. This side is the more scenic end, rolling hills, a river and some winding track. I just added that stark white hill today and will be a pasture that rolls down to the river. There will be a line of trees along the water and at the top of the hill where the track go's into the backdrop. I need to add some backheads to this bridge...

Very nice looking so far. 1 question: Are my eyes deceiving me or is there some ties suspended in midair at the ends of the bridge? Craig
Very nice, shows you don't need a basement or an abandoned wharehouse to build a nice looking layout.
Thanks guys. Craig, yes there are ties in the air there. I need to add some wooden backheads at the end of the bridge and some strips of cork between the backheads and the subroadbed. If you look at the 2nd photo you can see the gap that I'll be filling in along the top of the abutment.

Great sound dub! Nice scale speed run-by too, but how about putting the train in the center of the frame? The layout is looking good.

Alright then. I've got this done yesterday... The white hill has been textured. I painted on some tan paint and then sprinkled on a little dirt. I then brushed the two together with a wet brush. Same deal with the dirt by this bridge abutment. This riverbank was made by pressing the dirt into full strength white glue and then painting it. Enjoy! Got any questions, ask 'em.
I take it the dirt cracks along the riverbank occurred naturally from pressing the dirt into the white glue? That is a very nice effect and looks very realistic. Jamie
I think the cracks came from the paint going on a little thick on the dirt. Purely an accident but I think it turned out pretty cool.
As stated, nice scenery work! I've herd in the past many warnings against using dirt on a layout because of tiny metal debris that can make its way into the engines. Are you taking any precautions on this like sifting the dirt through magnets to capture the metal?
