George, i was not trying to be nasty but the Looxcie's lens sits high in its case and therefore gives a more realistic engineers view. Those cigarette lighter camers lay low. I tried two of them and neither had good video or deprh of field as the Looxcie does. BTW, haven't seen any photos of your layout lately, looking forward to your progress.

I can surely understand that. I know if my layout/trains looked anywhere near as good as yours...I would just be running trains and smiling...big !! And your 'additions' just fit so well well with everything. Very talented and inspiring...thnx

Jim, you're problems are solved with the video focus issue...

A new toy to buy! Canon 70D Review. Great camera especially for video.

TK, mine is a Canon Rebel T5i (EOS 700D), and it does have the video autofocus. Trouble is, it "hunts" all over the place and the result is mostly blurry. Kind of neat to watch the focus point follow a loco, but then the rest of the frame is blurred. And that's throwing a lot of light on the subject...

It's likely part of the learning curve on that camera - which I love, BTW.

But shooting with the Google Nexus 10 was a revelation - excellent depth of field and generally a very acceptable picture.

Jim the 70D takes all the hunting out of the equation. You should have waited a few more months.

Read about the Dual Pixel CMOS AF. It's a game changer in the DSLR field! That is the ticket. And with Canon's STM lenses there is virtually no noise associated with AF. For video...it is the next big thing. Read the review I posted above.

    Anyway... there you have it.

The GP60M's look great on the layout, and I really enjoyed the video! :)

Only problem is that $1500 buys a lot of locomotives and other train stuff. I'll wait five years also when the price comes down substantially. In the meantime, I'm having fun with my Lumia 928

Here's Jim & Joe - UP's canteens for their steam excursion trains. Built from a Shapeways item designed by James Norris (search on water bottles on shapeways.com or here). Brush painted, handrails are from Kato Dash 9, custom decals. I'm happy!

Don't usually do long overhead shots but this meet at Caliente crossovers was too good to pass up - the old and the new, warbonnets and swoosh, 60s and ACes...

What a beautiful railway you have built Jim. Right from building the frame work to the very nice detailing you have added I am inspired.

Thanks very much for sharing your journey to create a masterpiece.

I like 'overhead' shots. They add 'depth' that lower track level shots dont provide. Good work Jim ^5
