Thanks, guys! It gets a bit frustrating when you know what you want to do and just can't find the time to do it. You would think that being retired I have all the time in the world, but it just ain't so. Now that I'm this far, though, I can do most of what's needed in half hour increments. Which some days is about all I've got!
Very cool, Jim. Hope some of those beautiful oaks get restored around the ranch, would be a shame if the rancher clear cut the hillside. Very modern looking for most of the properties in that area!
I wanted to do a ranch with the screened in area in front but in N you'd never see the screening...if you use street view on Google you can see what they look like around Caliente. The oaks will be back, part of the ton of detail the area needs...

Exactly, George! At least at this point if the landscape work needs to be done, it's not at the expense of the layout. And if I don't get that half hour today, maybe I'll get it tomorrow - or the next day. Actually here in Tennseess I have two times a year that are layout times - winter when it's too chilly to be out and summer when it's too hot. But spring and fall are glorious and you want to be outside as much as possible (well, at least I do...).
Thanks, Mike - Just not enough of it! We had house guests Mon-Tue, they left yesterday but had to spend the rest of the day getting the car serviced and shopping, it's off to the nursery today because plants here are a lot like N Scale - you snooze you lose...and then they need to be planted...still a lot of mulching to do (I get 12 bags at a time - that's what fits my RAV4 - and then need to properly prepare the area to be mulched.) Takes two bags per tree, I'm on the third load right now, we have lots of trees...probably will use at LEAST another three to five loads. I'll maybe get some train time in late in the afternoon...but usually just too tired, just want to sit on the deck and read a bit...don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my life and working on the layout is the icing on the cake!
Way off topic but you might find it more economical to have several yards of mulch/compost delivered via dump truck.
Boxcab - Got THAT right!!! LocoHorn - I've done that in the past with a neighbor's pickup (2 yard capy) but have since installed irrigation and don't want to drive on the now beautiful lawn...I could have them deliver a truckload but then I'd have to protect the driveway from staining and lose its' use until I got it all spread...this way costs me more but I have complete control and very little mess. Thanks for the thought!

That is a great start Jim! Any clues as to what the next changes will be on the ranch? Perhaps some farm equipment or something?
Well that makes for even more intrigue and anticipation! It is always great to see your layout develop and then re-develop as you made the changes. I for one am not as scared to rip up existing track and modify both the track and the scenery as I used to be after seeing you do it with such ease!
I always figure if I did it once I can do it again, and probably better this time... And Boxcab: It's OK but I'm still not overly happy with it...I think it needs to be a bit more uniform...
