The program was made just after the BN merger. I have an original on VHS tape along with Western Coal Connection which is about the Gillette-Orin Line construction and the first train over it. Both are excellent. BN won an award of some kind for Portrait of a Railroad. There was also an insert in the Sunday papers at the time as well. I have the insert in a photo album here.
Fascinating stuff. I have a tendency sometimes to forget that railroads are more than just trains. I also noticed in both Portrait of a Railroad and the Fascinating World of GN little stuff that would probably not be acceptable today, such as the engineer smoking. And it's fun to see what has changed in railroading and what has not changed.
