A few weeks ago a member posted a poll in regards to Ski Train Interest. I rode the Ski Train last weekend with six friends and had a great time. None of us skied. We rode up there to enjoy a train trip ad to relax around town. Here are some pictures from the day. Hope you enjoy and maybe you might even consider a trip someday! Here is the first shot of the day. The Kansas waits in the early morning light at Denver Union Station. This is not the best pic but it gives you an idea of what a 2% grade looks like from the train. The head end is about round the upper horseshoe of the Big Ten Curves. Here the head end splits the signals at East Clay.
I would much rather be taking pictures of the Ski Train from the ground with my buddy Hemi. Here's a shot from the train. I was blessed with a gracious car host who didn't mind me open the top of the vestibule door to grab a few shots. We are going through Plainview at this point. A beautiful sunny morning! Here you can see the head end power going through Cresent. We are making great time! The Ski Train just arrived in winter park. Again, beautiful morning sun!
After a beautiful sunny morning I got the best of both worlds that afternoon. Here the Ski Train approaches to pick up its passengers for the return trip in moderate snowfall. Here is a close up as the power passes by. The head end will stop just short of the West Portal to allow passengers to board. The Ski Train has a high green at East Pinecliff. HighBall! We actually got into Denver about 10 minutes ahead of schedule. Last shot of the day. I have tried this shot before and couldn't make it work because I didn't have a tripod with me. This time I did and I think it worked! Hope you enjoyed shots from a perfect day on the Ski Train!
Ditto that! Fantastic shots! A ride I wanna take someday.. Too cool! Did you find any cool stuff in WP? In light of that comment, here's some Ski Train goodness from the rugged locations along the route! During a typical overcast day, the summer Jazz Train (Ski Train) threads Tunnels 13 and 14, and is about to enter T15 in South Draw: A chilling shot at Tunnel 29; last light is moments away: The Jazz Train on another day exits Tunnel 27: One of my very first Moffat trips, the Ski Train is just west of Rollinsville, CO:
Fantastic!! When I rode it back in the 70s it frankly had lost its luster and was a bit of a disappointment...nice to see it looking so good! Makes me miss that part of the world
Doc John, The 70's version of the Ski Train would have been a consist of ancient former Northern Pacific heavyweights. The ex-Canadian Tempo cars from 1987 are the current consist. the Ski Train back then was pretty tired, no doubt!
Yep, those were they! I remember that Dad wanted me to ride a train "before there were no more passenger trains in America" so he put mom and I on and he drove up to WP to pick us up. Worn out and tired it may have been, but it was loads of fun! I would like to get up there to ride the "new" version tho
I guess some shopping in Winter Park, and a Jazz festival? I think. It means good shootin' for Mike and I!
Well, if there are any shops in Winter Park, which "Joe Average" can afford, sounds like a fun outing. Boxcab E50
It was taken around 7 am. You said it looks cold in the snow shot pictures. It really wasn't too bad that day. We did spend much of the time in doors but when we were out it was by no means unbearable, especially in the morning when the sun was out. It was a perfect day. I couldn't have asked for anything better. Thanks to all for the nice comments.
