I found a picture of a Peabody Coal Co. Geep online and thought this would be a nice little weekend project...

    prototype: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/pictures/6579/PEABODY603.JPG
(yes, I know, the original is a Geep9 and I did use a Geep7 shell)

the decals are self made, the paint is a mix and the cut levers are self made too, the rest is only Atlas, BLMA, GMM, MTL and Sunrise... ;)

...and this black thing on the sill seems to be an A/C unit (I'm not sure) and it is made out of styrene and some cut off of a GMM Geep grill...

They certainly were known for their hoppers. Seeing any of their motive power in photos, seems rare. This is the first engine modeling I've ever seen from anyone. Now I'm curious to learn a little more...

When I was a kid, my dad took us through southern Indiana and Kentucky on the way to North Carolina one year on our annual vacation to visit my mother's family. I remember seeing a green and yellow Peabody switcher at a mine tipple pulling yellow hoppers with the Peabody name in red. Unfortunately my sister threw all the pictures away...

I had an N scale Peabody car back in the 70's. it was one of my favorites because back then I just loved coal cars. Ok, I still do.

    Nice diesel project.

    steve 4,
I was just sitting here listening to this band called Low and they have this song called John Prine. I always wondered who john prine was so your link provided an interesting video.

As to the rest of the site. I thought it was interesting. Without getting political, I think our industrial history is always a complicated thing. I found the whole anti mining issue interesting. It's sort of a catch 22. We need resources to maintain our quality of life, our quality of life gets impacted when we harvest said resources, whether timber or mineral.

Here in Colorado we have old mine sites that have huge tailings that are slowly leaching heavy metals into the water. And this stuff is old, much of it from a hundred years ago before people even thought about ecological impact.

Even Silver Plume the upper end of the george town loop has a super fund site or two all of it's own. Interestingly this stuff is all upstream along clear creek that is the source for Coors brewing company's water supply. they probably have their own spring as a source, but they are right down stream from these places. So one industry affects another.

So having said that. I find mining equipment and railroads really interesting. thanks both of you guys for the model and the site.

    Peabody Short Line

MTL did one of their 2 bay hoppers in the PSL's yellow color. I can remember LL doing some hoppers & MP a bunch of 2 bay notch hoppers in the yellow scheme.

You may have to hunt in the IC Historical Society to find any mention of the PSL and it's line near East St Louis. The line was bought & put out of business in the 1960's. It's possible what you have is a industrial short line that remains today to load coal at Peabody facilities? It appears a lot of Illinois & Kentucky coal is washed these days to cut some of the sulfur content.

Peabody has some strip mines out in the western part of Kentucky (as referenced in the John Prine song--Muhlenberg County is mentioned specifically) but they aren't much of a presence in eastern Kentucky where most of the state's coal comes from. They are a very large coal company though.

    Awesome job!.
I've got a photo of a Peabody Alco RS-3 on my Railimages site. I believe the hoppers were painted similar. Check it out.

I noticed this thread on Peabody Coal.

I had stumbled upon a photo of a Peabody hopper, sometime ago on the Northeast Railfan.net site....

    http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/pccx1205.jpg

I wonder if a "sheathed" Altas 90ton hopper could be used to do a close repeb.

I know Minitrix included the yellow Peabody coal cars in their sets in the 70's. I've still got my first and picked up another couple somewhere down the line also.

take a look on this picture, the unload hatches underneath they look totally different than the Atlas 90ton hoppers, other than that, good idea, just glue a piece of very thin styrene over the ribs...

    http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/tr_pccx900.jpg

...is there a car available with this sort of unload hatches ?

    Ya, your right.

I just went back to the Northeast site for a better look.
I had to adjust my monitor's resolution to see the extra gates.

What about the "ortner" cars. They had about five-six gates on the bottom?
Though, their length might be too long...
