Great contest. I wasn't even close on the first one.

    OK. Let's go.
    1- Immense passenger traffic.
1a- Large commuter service, from the parking lots and the number of buses near the station.
    2- Large urban area/dense population.
    3- Northern hemisphere.
4- Here's a stretch deduction. If you took the picture from Google when it was posted, that would make it roughly mid/late afternoon in the picture.

Uneducated guess from a bunch of probably wrong deductions, Japan.

I'm not sure I follow what you are saying on this point.

These photos are not "real time" when Google posts them. If you look at the compass water mark in the upper right corner to orient the image, again the shadows can give you a rough "sun dial" indication of the time of day. I come up with a different time of day.

What I was trying to say was that if you posted the picture at 5:30 AM, and the picture showed late afternoon 5:30 PM; you being in Maine would make the picture 12 hours later (or earlier), or roughly on the other side of the globe.
However, I was basing my premise on the fact that google photos were real time. Mr. Straw shot me down:sad:.

Just ignore me, I'll go away eventually.:zip:

No problem. It's a good point to make and that is that the photos are in the Google Earth database and may be anywhere from very recent to some years ago.

Don't make any assumptions based on time or date from the images.

    What Else?

The yards are at a North South orientation.
    The RR is electrified.
Is that the edge of a vary large traffic circle south of the yard or maybe a bend in a near by river?
And as the Fire Cheif has listed
    1- Immense passenger traffic.
1a- Large commuter service, from the parking lots and the number of buses near the station.
2- Large urban area/(very, very) dense population.
    3- Northern hemisphere.

Interesting contest. I think my lunch break is too short...

    Also...
    very flat terrain
from the yellowish tint to the undeveloped lands, it's also in an arid climate
Not sure about the Japan guess since there's no evidence of high speed rail lines
The boulevards in the lower right corner of the picture seem to project from a circular object, possibly a large stadium. Looks too orderly to be caused by a river.
    Definitely not in the USA

but my lunch break's ending, so good luck...

No we can't let you leave yet ;), you are doing quite well. Three out of your four were good deductions.

    Very interesting contest.
Firechief had a lot of good hints.
I was thinking foreign all the way. The thing that really gave it away me was the extreme density of the surrounding neighborhood. I thought Firechief was right with Japan. China or India were my next two guesses.

The poor neighborhoods on the left side of the (largest) photo are actually quite distinctive. Although Japan is densely populated, it doesn't have neighborhoods that look like that. Neither does China, actually.

The lots full of yellow taxis were also a consideration. Taxis aren't yellow everywhere.

Congratulations mrhedley. You are, as you already know, correct.

Good job on getting this one quickly.

Another one is ready and will be posted (most likely) tomorrow morning US Eastern time.

Morning eastern time is a bit unfair to us folks on the West Coast. At least it was this time. ;) I don't know what would be best given there are a bunch of Aussies on the board too, but give it some thought.

I know but many of them will not be figured out in an hour or two and I am available to post them early in the morning.

If it becomes an issue whereby the contests are always figured out quickly then I will on occasion get someone else to post one at a different time of day.

Some of them will be quite difficult and some will be easier.

It's all in fun and hopefully people will get enjoyment from this.
