Tonight I finished the start of the ATSF Line bench work at Pinole. This is just a simple straight line between Richmond and Franklin Canyon.

Cardboard webbing will go from the ATSF Line down to the SP Main and begain forming the hills between the two lines.

This end here is going to be wider and even though it's down much further in real life will have the Pinole station. (Modelers licence.:))

I saw this picture in a ATSF calender and thought I had to figure a way to put it on the layout. Simple scene, yet very full on wonderful details. The ties, the signals, the name PINOLE on the station, just a great scene!
So, it's going on the far corner. Where the tracks curve away, it will go throught a backdrop, and come out on the other side into Franklin Canyon. :)

    Jerry,

Looking good but i have one concern, won't the branch line create a scenic block to the mainline and that fantastic double main curve? or can you access both sides of the benchwork?

I rode the Caltrains service from Sacramento to San Jose last November - on the ex-SP main at the bay level. Those "S" curves are what you're modeling, I presume, and I could see the ex-ATSF main further up on the hill from the train.... I knew where to look for it in the Richmond area.

So that's looking sorta/kinda familiar, at least having seen it. This is the Oh, NOW I get it moment!

I'm not sure what the scenery was for your era, but if you're doing anything like it looks today, I'm buying Plastruct stock - you'll be buying every oil tank kit ever made....!

Right now you can access both sides pretty easily. When it is all said and done the double main curve is going to be the front, (You'll be viewing from the ocean side), and there will be a back drop a couple inches from the ATSF main. The back drop will be about 18inches high, blocking the view from whats behind it. My hope is that as you move from one area to the next, each 'scene' will have it's own look and feel. I am following the plan I drew out pretty good, but as I put curves in and do planning I am adding/subtracting as I go along. :)

I think any era from the 30's till today would have those tanks! LOL :) I fact, when my brother and I were in our teens, we worked one summer for ITT. We rode our bikes from Antioch to Martinez every morning, suited up inside a plant, and sprayed 'M', (Some chemical), on the sides of tank trucks and inside and outside of storage tanks, then scrubed them with long handled brushes, and then pressure washed them. Very hard work! At the end of the day, we rode our bikes back to Antioch. My Dad couldn't believe we did it all summer and was very proud of us. When Kimberly and I went to Pinole to get some pictures in Feb. we drove in bumper to bumper traffic, and we laughed as I told her I could have rode my bike faster! LOL Well, back then I could have......I would have pooped out in the shape I'm in now.:)

I have been researching ATSF stations, and was sad to learn the Pinole station was torn down in 1998. I have a picture of it right before it was torn down, and was in pretty sad shape. Luckily, I have a great book with a picture of it, and blueprints of the floor plan, so I may scratchbuild it with a full interior. :)

Today I started cutting and placing cardboard strips to get an idea of how the hills are going to look.

I'll staple them down later, and then start forming the shapes I want and weaving more cardboard through these pieces.

I printed out pictures I took of the different areas in Feb. and laid them out about where they are so I will be able to shape the hills pretty close to the real ones. At least thats the plan! :)
