That usually means the image is no longer available, or the server it's on is not available.
Can you give specific example of the posts you are not seeing the images in?

    Possible problem

If I neglect to check the "remember me" box when I log in, I get the same thing. See if that isn't the problem you're having, too.

thanks guys, i tried re-logging on. no fix. it seems that (for example) when i try to view hemiadda2s' pics almost all show the box w/ the red X. but if someone uses his pics in a response quote box, then i can view them. i'm a neophyte when it comes to computer programs and such so i don't know what i'm doing wrong.

Do us a favor and click on the [IMG] on one of those you are not seeing the image so I or one of the other TB Staff can review that post vs. your profile and see if we can detect why this is happening to you. As stated before, if the image is actually no longer where the post thinks it is you will see the red x rather than the image.

Also, do you see the image below or the D&H train in my signature?

Another reason is that if you are surfing TB from work :D, your work's network could be blocking some IP address due to known spammers, viruses, etc. I have that problem with a certain picture host (not TB). Pictures don't load at work but work fine from home.

I've checked out the post you reported. What I found is that image HEMI posted was on the "Old" RailImages site and he has since removed that images and moved them to the "New" RailImages so that would cause all of us to see a "x" now. I don't know if HEMI plans to edit those posts to relink the missing images or not.

Either way, there is nothing wrong on your side...

    Some Image Basics

In general, when you see the dreaded red "X" it means that the link is wrong or dead. The "old" Railimages assigned each image a unique address; the current Railimages assigns each image a unique address, but it is not the same address. These addresses are imbedded in a post.

So, when you open a post, your computer goes looking for that imbedded address. If it finds the address, it displays it as an image within the post. If it doesn't find it, it displays the "x" or, sometimes a "?". In 99% of the cases, it just means that the image has been moved or deleted, and the author of the post hasn't changed the address.

There are other rare causes of the "x". Occasionally the image file is corrupted--the data got scrambled, usually when uploaded. Or, in my case when people were getting the "x", I uploaded the wrong type of JPG. Because I work in print most of the time, I convert my images to a print mode, called CYMK. I often forget, when downsizing images for posting on Trainboard, to convert the JPG image back to the Internet standard, called RGB. These two modes can be vastly different; I have to use CYMK to make sure that what I see on the screen is what will print correctly. But, if I post a CYMK image to my Railimages album, and then imbed the address in a post, it will display as a red "x".

Almost always, the problem is not at the receiving end.
