If you haven't heard Whatcom County Washington, as well as most of the rest of Western Washington has been blasted with up to 15 inches of Snow. I would be out for pics of trains however Bellingham has called a Snow Emergency, which means that unless you need to be out stay home. It is beautiful and hopefully I can get some shots soon

We only got 2 inches out here in Eastern Washington. Too bad for you all.

Lots of snowy trains going by towards Stevens Pass.

It even snowed on the Oregon coast today, a real rarity. I don't miss all that shoveling as a kid in upstate New York.

We received a foot. Some blowing and drifting. High today supposedly 4 above. Tonight 10-15 below. Just normal weather for the season.

But, as usual, I won't be out railfanning. I did that during one blizzard. Which was enough for a lifetime.

Around here, when there's a snow emergency, everybody goes to work anyhow.

I was thinking of a place, where it would be great to catch photos of a train. That's the tracks below Chuckanut Drive. Would be very scenic!

I wish.. But since I have plenty of snowy scenes, here's a few in blizzards, and after the same!
Alaska GP49 and I got up before dawn, drove to Moffat Tunnel, cutting our own tracks much of the way, and drove up the old Rollins Pass grade to capture this view, in a blinding blizzard:

After a foot of fresh power fell on the Front Range, I hit the Moffat, on a different trip. Here's a few of the things I saw:

I rarelytire of this view from Tunnel 7 eastbound:

On the same day, pea-soup thick fog rolled in, and I bagged Amtrak westbound at Tunnel 5 and 6:

The very first time I hit the Moffat with Alaska GP49 that I drove, we hit an icy patch,a ndheaded over an embankment... Here's a coal load at Rollinsville, from the guy's backyard, in which we were 'parked':

Ken, I live 20 miles from Chuckanut drive and actually cancelled dinner with friends at the rhodadendrain Cafe on Bow Road, and Chuckanut.

Bellingham and Whatcom County were very stupid and sold the snow plows. Now our roads are a sheet of ice and in this state they don't use salt. Only sand. Schools are closed again in the County even WWU, we might even have tomorrow off since wind chills are about 0- -6 degrees

As I look outside my window whilst typing - my outside Christmas lights are shrouded in thick fog. Unseasonably warm here in Ontario -while west of us is experiencing very cold and wet weather. It is so foggy that I can not see the reflection of the railheads fon the CN mainline at the end of my backyard.

Well, if you'd go to college, and take Poli-Sci, your mind would end up in the same complete ruin, as those you've noted here. It snows all the time in western Washington. What's rare, is a year with no significant snows. Not the other way around.

I remember years ago, Seattle sold their plows. Ended up having to buy them back. At a big loss. There is no expense, in storing a plow that is paid for. Or a pile of sand. Neither deteriorates just sitting. But they love to play games with bookkeeping. To make themselves look good. And you end up paying for $ it. Some folks end up hurt or dead.

My outdoor thermometer is sitting on one degree above right now. I should turn on the scanner. See how the RR is handling traffic. This is rail breaking cold now. To be well below zero by morning. Is there a speed reduction order in place? Hmmmm. Or will they wait until a train scatters itself, and blocks the line?

    :eek:mg:

GF is getting brutally cold.... -13 now, wind chills -37. Yikes!
Definitely rail breaking cold. I remember this cold from January, when the daytime high was 0, and the low that day was -25. I drove to Calgary that day for Supertrain at the Stampede grounds, and to visit Grant-sar... What a day! Does BNSF, or any RR for that matter, have a contingency plan for the DS to slow trains, or inspect rails during extreme cold? I think this qualifies as extreme cold!

The liquid sunshine turned to snow here in the Willamette Valley, giving us a bit of a dusting Monday. Nothing to write home about, but snow DID fall.

This is headed for Texas by week's end- down there, the snow removal device rises in the East every morning.:eek:mg:

We are warned that some snow might actually fall here about noon or later today! If we get 1/4" of snow on the ground, it usually freezes to glare ice and schools close! Most traffic fatalities happen on the many overpasses and bridges around here. Cars and trucks slide into passing trains, or in front of them.
I put snow chains on all 4 wheels of the pickup and had no problem, but other people couldn't stop in time and slid into me. With a 5600 pound truck, I get Little or no damage, but the little disposable cars people drive today become instant trash. :D
