Thrommer Locomotive and Cars My first loco designed entirely by me: The Thrommer locomotive is a completely non-sense / Sci Fi idea I made up. The "scoop" on the top is to collect "Throms". Throms are an < insert science double talk > used in a reaction to run the loco. The passenger cars have a smaller version. A freight car version is currently being designed. Throms are named after the engineer that discovered them. I intend to make a set of these in N Scale using model rocket parts.
OK, but it looks to me like the aerodynamics would start lifting the loco off the track at just about 140, but maybe at lesser speeds. Where's all the air going under the thrommer going to go? Looks to me like it's going to lift the train off the tracks.:angel: Downforce, Steve! You need downforce!
I also believe the air would lift the engine of the track. The Japanese engineers must have experience the same problem and solved it with some add ons.
Good point Pete. I seem to recall that the top speed of a GG1 was 120. After that it started to lift off the tracks. Working on solution as we speak. engineshop - looks like they are using "air damns". Ok, they have been added. : Thanks guys
The realistic top speed of my Maserati Ghibli was 145. It would go much faster if I cared to fly. Since it didn't have flight controls, I backed off very quickly. BTW, 145 was only the top of fourth gear. There was a fifth gear. The windows tended to blow out at 145, causing one to soil his pants. The advice from the Maserati manual was: "When driving fast and lifting [off], reduce throttle and make no braking or steering correction. The car settles." It did, but what a ride!
I did some mental comparisons on the way home. Considering the effective fin size on lighter vehicles moving much faster I have a feeling that the amount of area tor wings to be functional on a heavy locomotive moving at 150+mph would be disproportionate to the benefit. Still, they do look cool. Picture soon. Edit On second thought after doodling a bit more the thing looks like a rocket with the fins. Soo, I like the scoops on top but as I considered what would be involved in modeling them on a curved surface I realized: "That dog won't hunt".
Steve Tilted 90 degrees down it could be a sample of nice give away pen for your clients. I will say this, I sure am glad this is a family oriented site. Track vibrations, LOL
