UP Yellow Safety Stripes on Engines, will this be enforced and applied to the two UP Steam engines in service? Yellow Saftey Stripe along the walkways of both steam engines? UGH
AFIAK, no. Equipment used in passenger only service is exempt. Also most historical equipment is exempt as well. I also believe that if the equipment does not pass over any at grade crossings it does not need the new reflective striping. Personally, I love the new yellow stripes on UPs diesel fleet. Looks more professional to me. I don't think you could apply it to the steamers in an attractive manner. By the way, if we havn't said it yet, WELCOME ABOARD!!!
Well from what I read about the new FRA regs that deal with this, you can use either yellow or white. I know that the NS and some of the old IC units are receiving the white version. CSX is using the yellow like the UP. But There are a number of steamers across the country that cross public crossings, I hope that they dont get the striping. That would be as silly as putting ditch lights on a steamer. IHMO.
White I could swallow, but yellow? That is horrible. I hope they don't do it! Next all the rolling stock will be fire-engine green BTW...welcome TOMG!!! John
Not sure but I would guess that there is an exemption for historic equipment. Steam locomotives do not require ditch lights either and are not speed restricted over public crossings.
I believe that most UP Steam trips have an entourage of Special Agents that chase or lead the train on the nearby public highways. They have in the past 'flagged' at some crossings that I have seen. That would be the logical solution though it would require a huge labor and vehicular cost considering the speed she made thru NM when the trip was made this past May.
