There are so many!! One of my standard lines (and one that gets a roll of the eyes from the wife) is if there is even one scene showing a train in the background of a movie I always say "its gonna be a great movie because they showed a train!!" Of course it could be the worst movie on the planet for all I know :D

    "Bite the Bullet"

Gene Hackman & a young, sexy, Candice Bergen on the D&RGW featuring the 483 in some of the gaudiest paint ever.

It was, I'm pretty sure, the last film made before the D&RGW gave up the Ghost on the San Juan extension.

Lots of disjointed scenes from across the line put together to look like a progression that bear no resemblance to the reality of the geography. However, it worked.

    Once Upon a Texas Train

    "Once Upon a Texas Train"

Starring Willie Nelson, Richard Widmark, and a bunch of others. Seems almost like a sitcom. I haven't see too many trains yet. (I have the DVD.) How did you like it? Thanks.

I know I have posted it somewhere before, but there is a Bollywood film called 'Dil Se' that has a great scene shot on top of a short steam train running through India. It is captured on this video. [ame="http://youtube.com/watch?v=9CT5oX1fu4I"]video[/ame]

The guy is a famous actor in south Asia named Shahrukh Khan. Don't pay much attention to the lyrics because they're inane, but the train moving though the landscape is quite interesting, all the while with dancers atop the train cars.

TCM is showing "Santa Fe" right now. Randolph Scott stars. Good one, IMHO.

Watch "The Train" starring Burt Lancaster. It is set in France during WWII. Absolutely fantastic.

"The General" a 1920s silent film starring Buster Keaton is my all time favorite train movie. There are some action sequences in it that I don't think even Jackie Chan or Jet Li would take on...

Thanks, Alhoop. That's pretty neat. It will take some time to watch it all, but lots of steam action in the video. It must be 30-40 minutes long.

There are a whole series of oldies on Turner Classic Movies this month. I saw Santa Fe and The Long Riders tonight.

While I'm sure it's a good movie, it's as old as I am.

I'm wondering if there has been a movie made recently that centers around, or prominently features a train. There have been many that have trains in them for a passing shot (part of the scenery), and maybe a crash, but nothing substantial... Unless I missed something

And 'Money Train' doesn't count! :we-no:

Edit: Oops, forgot about 'The Polar Express'. Good movie, actually.

Under Siege II is the last one I can think of. It has the classic train falls of the trestle scene. Also the Peacemaker, with George Clooney has a good crash. Cheers, Jim CCRR

The absolute best train movie ever is Michael Crichton's "The Great Train Robbery" with Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland. But you have to read the book first. It will help you appreciate some of the scenes in the movie much more. Especialy the one about the "Safety."

Funny, I was going to mention that one too. But then I looked it up and realized that it's over 10 years old (1997). Where has the time gone? :tb-shocked:

Under Seige II is from 1995. I recall seeing Steven Seagal a few months ago, and YIKES, he's looking pretty old these days.

Try to catch "Switch Back" (1997) with Dennis Quiad and Danny Glover. Lots of more-modern freight action (I think Rio Grande IIRC) in the mountains. Good story too!

It's rated R though for scenes with nude pinups. Bonus??
