I remember these in their brief stint in Conrail blue. Thanks for the memory.

My wife is out hiking today with other women on a state trail that follows an old SOU line between Alston, SC and Prosperity, SC. Built in the 1850s, it was abandoned by NS in the mid 1990s after a trackage rights agreement with CSX allowed NS to continue service elsewhere on the line.

We've hiked the easternmost segment of the line and the rails and ties are gone. Really neat that further west, these are still in place. Seems that someone nabbed the milepost marker or whistle sign on that pedestal.

    New Haven EF-4 electrics.

Interestingly, 300 (behind lead 309) is at the Illinois Railway Museum, and they're planning on restoring her.:)

They looked good right after being repainted by Conrail - but four decades later, pending a rehab by IRM, not so much.

Looks like a late model GP35, like the Milwaukee Road owned.

CR's E-33s had an amazingly varied life, having been first bought by the VGN before being sold to the NYNH&H. The 135 shown here survives at the museum at Roanoke, painted in splendid VGN colors. With many museums working to rationalize their collections, I'm not sure why the Illinois Railway Museum took an interest in an E-33, other than the IRM has evolved into quite the traction attraction.
