Chama in 1924, about one year before a fire destroyed much of this part of the town. Outfit cars in the foreground were used to house extra gang workers.

The Rio Grande gave it a fake diamond smoke stack to reflect what the tourist seem to have expected on an old west steam locomotive. Looked kind of weird to me. Still sporting the diamond stack in 1976 when I photographed it at Elk Park heading to Silverton. Flagged it down later that day to ride back to Durango.
Looks like those outfit cars were built taller for tunnel work, maybe? The car at lower right has a walkway with handrails.
